ZERRE – ROTTING ON A GOLDEN THRONE

AVAILABLE NOW via DYING VICTIMS PRODUCTIONS - Sharp cutting riffs, a speed that could break your neck, and aggression without mercy, German thrash has never been about keeping it quiet and nice. Since the good old days, legends like SODOM, DESTRUCTION, TANKARD or KREATOR (who all belong to the Big Teutonic 4) have defined the genre, a standard that still walzes through the underground up until today. Assembled from Würzburg, the band ZERRE kicks directly into that lineage, delivering their own brand of unfiltered intensity and passion. Over the past decade, ZERRE have carved out their place in the German thrash underground, refining their sound into something sharp and uncompromising. Now, with their fourth full-length album, "Rotting On A Golden Throne" out soon, they show a grown and matured work. Led by vocalist Nico Ziska, alongside Tim Müller on bass, Basti Spahn on drums, and the twin-guitar attack of Dominik Bertelt and Rocco Lepore, the band operates as a focused, hard-driving unit built on precision and aggression. With the groundwork laid, it’s time to dive headfirst into the music and see what this record truly delivers.

The album opens with a slow-building intro, beginning with acoustic guitars before gradually giving way to heavier, distorted tones. There’s a faint echo of METALLICA’s 'To Live Is to Die' in its early moments, as the piece unfolds with a sense of restrained grandeur. The guitars take on an epic quality, hinting at what’s to come, while the drums ease in, warming up beneath the surface. A brief pause follows, holding the tension in place before the album fully reveals its hand.nThe first proper track, 'Pigs Will Be Pigs', bursts in with hard-hitting drums and a barrage of fast, distorted riffs, immediately setting the tone. There’s no hesitation, no detours-just pure, uncompromising thrash. A killer riff drives the track forward, locking into a galloping, razor-sharp groove, backed by machine-gun drumming. Frontman Nico’s hardcore-infused shouts cut through the chaos, bolstered by massive gang vocals that amplify the track’s confrontational energy. With 'Deception of the Weak', ZERRE double down on their thrash credentials, delivering a track built on sheer momentum and attitude. Driving riffs lash forward with precision, locked in with pounding drums and a groove that refuses to let up. Vocally, Nico pushes further into harsher territory, shifting between gritty shouts and biting screams, with a sudden falsetto outburst adding an unexpected edge. A well-crafted solo injects additional flair, while a tightly executed two-step section fuels the track’s raw energy. The chorus stands out in particular, with open-string chugging and chord accents reinforcing the gang vocals to striking effect. Though firmly rooted in classic thrash, the slightly tempered pace allows each element to land with clarity, with the clean production highlighting every detail of the band’s aggressive delivery.

'Mental Vacation' amps up ZERRE’S high-energy approach, layering the track with mosh-inducing sections that channel the raw, unrelenting spirit of EXODUS. Clocking in at over seven minutes, it’s a relentless push forward-galloping riffs collide with precise, machine-gun drumming, while Nico’s aggressive shouts cut through the chaos with a fierce sense of urgency. The song balances brutality with hooks that stick, each breakdown and groove amplifying the track’s pit-ready intensity. It’s a masterclass in modern thrash that holds the listener in its grip from start to finish, proving that Zerre are as comfortable weaving extended arrangements as they are delivering straight-ahead aggression. The title track, 'Rotting On A Golden Throne', proves the Band's clever songwriting, blending catchy hooks with full-throttle aggression. Riffs surge with precision, alternating between breakneck speed and mid-paced heaviness, while Nico’s raspy shouts and commanding vocals drive the chorus with undeniable force. Strategic breakdowns in the middle section add tension and variation, ensuring the track never loses momentum. With its mix of again, classic EXODUS, their own heavy thrash, fused with the energy of MUNICIPAL WASTE, the song delivers relentless power from start to finish. As the album nears its conclusion, 'Killing Taste' reasserts the band’s thrash roots with a fierce display of speed, aggression, and razor-sharp riffing. It’s a track that strips everything down to the essentials, delivering pure, unfiltered intensity. From there, 'No Alibi' takes over as a fitting finale, introduced by a piercing, almost visceral scream that immediately sets the tone. The song wastes no time, pushing forward with relentless energy and a sense of finality-no compromises, no escape. It’s an all-or-nothing closer that demands total commitment, bringing the album to a powerful and uncompromising end.
