WOLFSHEAD - Wolfshead

There is something undeniably appealing about bands that keep the spirit of traditional heavy metal alive without feeling the need to reinvent the genre. Formed in Auckland, New Zealand, in 2022, WOLFSHEAD emerged from a shared passion for classic heavy metal and hard rock, determined to capture the energy and authenticity of their musical influences. After several years of refining their sound and navigating lineup changes, the band are finally ready to unleash their self-titled debut album, Wolfshead, on November 23, 2026, through Jawbreaker Records. Recorded and produced by the band themselves, the album promises soaring guitar harmonies, powerful dual vocals and plenty of old-school attitude. But does WOLFSHEAD's dedication to the traditional heavy metal sound result in something genuinely exciting, or are they simply revisiting familiar territory? Let's find out.

We kick things off with 'Tyranny & The Hunter', where a beautifully played guitar passage sets the scene before subtle drumming gradually joins in. As the composition progresses, the pace increases and the guitars become more distorted, introducing an infectious melodic groove that immediately catches the ear. Several well-executed solos and some impressive dual-guitar interplay add plenty of character, allowing the instrumentation to take centre stage. Vocals appear rather sparingly, adopting a storytelling approach that complements the music without dominating it. An intriguing opening that places the emphasis firmly on musicianship and melody, leaving me curious to discover what WOLFSHEAD has in store next.

‍

'Ashen Fawn' immediately picks up the pace with rapidly played guitars and an energetic rhythm that wastes little time getting down to business. The drumming takes a leading role without overpowering the other instruments, allowing each element enough room to breathe and contribute to the song's lively character. Vocally, WOLFSHEAD embraces a more traditional heavy metal approach, delivering the lyrics with a spitting attitude and plenty of old-school grit. Another well-executed guitar solo towards the end rounds things off nicely, reinforcing the band's obvious appreciation for classic metal musicianship.

‍

Next up is 'Dust and Smoke', which introduces a slightly more epic character, driven by expressive guitar riffs and occasional clean passages that give the music room to breathe. However, these quieter moments are short-lived before the composition charges forward again, propelled by energetic drumming and enthusiastic gang-shouted vocals. There is something wonderfully infectious about this combination, making it easy to imagine the song becoming a live favourite, bringing plenty of joy and probably a few sore necks to the audience. And speaking of those epic elements, do yourself a favour and pay close attention to the guitar solo towards the end. It's an absolute treat for lovers of traditional heavy metal.

‍

'Cold Wings of Steel' leads us into the album's second half, opening with a brief drum solo before launching into energetic, fist-raising vocals and melodic instrumentation. There is a wonderful sense of nostalgia running through the song, with the guitar work capturing the spirit of traditional heavy metal without sounding like a mere imitation. Admittedly, WOLFSHEAD aren't reinventing the genre here, but that hardly seems to be their intention. Instead, the track reflects a genuine appreciation for heavy metal's golden days, combining familiar elements with enough of the band's own personality to make the experience thoroughly enjoyable.

‍

The title track 'Wolfshead' pushes us into the album's final stretch, picking up the pace even further than some of its predecessors. Galloping guitar riffs and creative drumming provide a powerful foundation for the passionate vocals, giving the song an almost unstoppable momentum. Yet following the bridge, a slightly melancholic undertone emerges, adding an unexpected emotional touch without sacrificing any of that infectious energy. Perhaps it's the realisation that our journey with WOLFSHEAD is slowly drawing to a close, or simply the band's ability to weave different emotions into their music. Either way, the contrast works beautifully, making this one of the more intriguing moments on the record.

‍

We close the album with 'Pervade the Pyres'’, the longest composition on the record, clocking in at just over eight minutes. Surprisingly, it begins with a beautiful, slow guitar riff carrying an almost sorrowful undertone, before the drums enter with the kind of energy that makes you feel the sheer joy behind every beat. Expressive guitar lines and enthusiastic gang shouts soon join the mix, building a powerful wall of sound. It's a fitting conclusion that showcases not only WOLFSHEAD's passion for traditional heavy metal but also their impressive musicianship. Particularly during the final minutes, both before and after the bridge, the thoughtful songwriting and instrumental skills become increasingly apparent. An excellent finale that leaves little doubt about the dedication these musicians bring to their craft.

‍

With their self-titled debut, WOLFSHEAD deliver an energetic and passionate celebration of traditional heavy metal. Galloping riffs, expressive guitar solos, powerful drumming and spirited vocals capture the genre's timeless appeal, while occasional melancholic passages add welcome depth. Although the band aren't reinventing the wheel, their genuine enthusiasm and impressive musicianship give the album a personality of its own. Particularly enjoyable are the infectious melodies and thoughtful songwriting, which make even the longer compositions engaging. Wolfshead is a thoroughly entertaining debut that proves sometimes the greatest strength lies in playing the music you love with absolute conviction.
