Available now via Dying Victims Productions - Conceived as a studio project by Mark Wild (Körgull The Exterminator, among others), WHIRLWIND emerges from a deeply personal connection to classic heavy metal—a genre that left a lasting imprint on him during his formative years. The project channels the spirit of ’80s German metal, drawing clear inspiration from early RUNNING WILD, early HELLOWEEN, ACCEPT, HEAVEN’S GATE, GRAVESTONE, TYRANT, GRAVE DIGGER, STEELER, and STORMWITCH. At the same time, it embraces the broader legacy of traditional heavy metal, with echoes of MERCYFUL FATE, MANOWAR, IRON MAIDEN, and JUDAS PRIEST shaping its sound and identity. Patience has clearly been part of WHIRLWIND’s journey. Formed in 2012, the Spanish heavy metal outfit took ten years to deliver their debut full-length, 1714. Now, four years on, they return with album number two—once again rooted in history and titled after a significant year: 1640. It’s a concept that injects an extra spark into their music, blending traditional heavy metal with a sense of historical narrative—an approach that adds both character and depth to the listening experience. How this translates sonically is what we will explore in this review.
The album opens with a combined intro and title track, '1640', setting an immediate heroic tone that builds momentum and anticipation. Strong guitar work drives the composition, supported by marching drum patterns that, while in the background, still add a clear sense of weight and structure. The result is an energetic and promising opening that effectively establishes the album’s atmosphere. The first full track, 'Days of Doom', wastes no time establishing its presence. Fast, distorted guitars take the lead, supported by dark, raspy vocals that carry raw intensity. There’s a clear nod to early RUNNING WILD in both atmosphere and execution. The drumming remains relentless without becoming overwhelming, maintaining a steady drive throughout. While a more prominent bass presence would have added depth, the track still stands as a strong example of heavy metal in its purest form-rounded off with an engaging guitar solo. 'Winds of Ash and Dust', released ahead of the album as a single, surges forward with even greater momentum. The track shines through its more versatile vocal delivery, with soaring high notes adding both drama and intensity. While leaning more into melody than sheer aggression, it loses none of its power. A more pronounced bass presence gives the sound additional weight, while the well-placed break and strong guitar work showcase the band’s sense for dynamics. The chorus is the true highlight-instantly memorable and bursting with energy, it practically demands a raised fist and full-volume participation.
'Through Fire and Blood' delivers a warm, distorted guitar sound that instantly transports the listener back a few decades. A strong sense of nostalgia runs through the track, paired with a subtle undercurrent of melancholy that adds emotional weight. While certain passages may feel slightly less refined in production, these moments hardly detract from the experience. The strength of the songwriting, combined with expressive instrumentation and vocals, draws the listener in deeply-making minor imperfections easy to overlook. 'By the Blood in Our Veins' immediately stands out with a brief but skillfully executed drum intro, setting a tone that feels almost martial in nature—evoking marching into battle, a fitting prelude to the album’s closing track. Compared to its predecessors, the song leans more into groove, adding another layer to the album’s dynamic. This shift works in its favor, giving the track a distinct identity without breaking cohesion. The guitar solo is supported by a thick bassline, while the vocal performance ranks among the strongest on the album, combining power and clarity to great effect. The closing track, 'Marching to Victory', unfolds as a 13-minute epic that brings the album to a grand conclusion. It opens with atmospheric elements—church bells and a slowly rising guitar line-setting a sense of weight and anticipation. A spoken-word passage follows, echoing voices of revolution and reinforcing the album’s thematic core. As the track develops, the band delivers one final display of capability: precise instrumentation and commanding vocals cut through the dense atmospheric mix. The influence of ACCEPT is present, yet WHIRLWIND infuses it with their own identity. The result is a powerful, immersive finale and a memorable closing statement.
With 1640, WHIRLWIND delivered a passionate and authentic tribute to classic heavy metal, driven by strong riffs, memorable melodies, and a clear sense of identity. While not every moment is flawless, the album’s energy, historical concept, and heartfelt execution make it a compelling and rewarding listen for fans of traditional metal.
