Released independently - Out now - Voidthrone’s Dreaming Rat sure wasn’t built for easy listening, instead, the album takes listeners to a purely hostile environment. Forty six minutes of collapsing structures, and neurological overload arrives through dissonant blackened death metal, feeling violently excavated from some infected subconscious. The Seattle quartet have always rocked the boat in extremes, but this record pushes far beyond the density of Metaphysical Degradation into something more uglier in its chaos.

The album’s three act structure (past, present, future) gets to work like a decaying philosophical cycle. Civilization rises, mutates, consumes itself, then rots in silence. Opening songs “Homeless Animal,” “Morbid Seagull,” and “Ren Omega” are pure sensory warfare, with beats detonating beneath fretless bass runs, and Zhenya Frolov sounding like his lungs are collapsing mid ritual. Frolov’s performance is the centerpiece of the record. His death growls become panicked shrieks, animalistic retching, and delirious chants. Never settling.
Beneath the psychosis of Dreaming Rat sits some kind of precise arrangement. Songs consistently mutate without any collapse. “Dreaming Rat” balances tech violence with eerie atmosphere, while “Surfing the Abyss” introduces absurdity into the apocalypse, sounding almost playful before firing right back into chaos again.
The unconventional use of instruments, otamatone, jaw harp, didgeridoo, and spoons, should feel a little off centre. Instead, deepening the hallucination, with every texture feeding the album’s sense of cosmic instability.
Dreaming Rat is exhausting, oppressive, and frequently overwhelming. Just what the doctor ordered.
