VÉHÉMENCE – ASSIÉGÉ POUR L'ÉTERNITÉ

Release Date: 10 June 2026 via Antiq - Originally released in 2014, Assiégé saw VÉHÉMENCE laying the foundations for what would later become known as medieval black metal. Blending melodic black metal rooted in both the French and Swedish traditions with ancient-sounding folk influences, the duo created a sound overflowing with triumph, melancholy, and an unmistakably medieval aura. Even in its rough early form, the album carried a timeless and deeply immersive spirit that later records like Par le sang versé and Ordalies would elevate even further. Now, with "Assiégé pour l’Eternité", VÉHÉMENCE revisit that landmark release not through a simple rerecording, but a full recomposition. Expanded by KK of Passéisme on bass alongside Tulzcha, Thomas Leitner, and Hyvermor, the band reshaped their debut with renewed depth and vision while preserving the epic heart that made it so influential in the first place. But enough about the history behind the record, the real question is: how does "Assiégé pour l’Eternité" actually sound?

'De Célestes Cavalcades' opens the album with atmospheric sounds reminiscent of a blade being drawn before VÉHÉMENCE erupts into furious blast beats and sweeping melodic riff work. A distant, rasping scream tears through the opening chaos, followed by driving drum patterns that push the track relentlessly forward. The vocals sound venomous and urgent, as if every line is being forced outward, while the songwriting balances raw black metal aggression with the band’s unmistakable sense of melody and epic atmosphere. The title track, 'Assiégé pour l’Éternité', begins on a surprisingly fragile and melodic note, built around shimmering clean guitar lines that feel almost triumphant before VÉHÉMENCE gradually hardens the sound into something more forceful. Coming directly after the explosive opener, the song initially feels less rooted in traditional black metal, leaning instead into a brighter, more heroic atmosphere while the agonized vocals remain firmly intact. Any doubts disappear once the band launches into a blasting, riff-driven assault packed with soaring melodies and a powerful bass presence. Fast, detailed, and emotionally charged, the track perfectly captures VÉHÉMENCE’s ability to balance aggression with epic grandeur. 'Le Sang Respire Encore' charges forward on commanding drum work and surging guitar lines that immediately evoke warriors riding toward battle. VÉHÉMENCE channels a powerful sense of movement throughout, while the harsh vocals carry the presence of a battle-worn commander rallying his men before the next clash. The addition of folk elements, particularly the flute melodies woven through the composition, deepens the atmosphere with touches of melancholy and nostalgia, giving the track both heroic force and emotional weight.

‍

'En Quête du Graal' sees VÉHÉMENCE leaning into a more aggressive and relentless approach. Driven by sharp, riff work and forceful drumming, the track constantly pushes forward with intense momentum, while the prolonged screams add another layer of desperation and grandeur. What stands out most is the band’s confident songwriting, the song follows a clear epic direction yet still leaves space for dynamic shifts and creative details. A well-placed guitar solo and a brief folk-inspired clean passage break up the aggression perfectly before the composition surges back into heavier territory with renewed force. After the preceding black metal storm, 'Chant d’Honneur' draws the listener in with deeply melancholic melodies that awaken a strange sense of longing-for something lost, distant, or perhaps never truly possessed at all. VÉHÉMENCE slowly builds tension beneath those fragile melodies until the double bass drumming and raw distorted guitars emerge from the background, shattered further by tortured, pain-filled vocals. Yet even at its most aggressive, the track never loses that underlying sense of yearning, especially during the beautifully placed flute passages and quieter rhythmic sections. The band shifts effortlessly between moods and pacing throughout the song, making every transition feel natural and emotionally cohesive rather than forced. VÉHÉMENCE closes the album with the entirely instrumental 'Par Sombres Forêts et Vastes Plaines', a piece that offers space to breathe and reflect after the intensity of the preceding tracks. Gentle folk melodies intertwine gracefully, telling their own story without the need for words or vocals. The atmosphere feels deeply meditative and majestic, allowing the album to fade out not in violence, but in quiet contemplation and timeless melancholy.

‍

With "Assiégé pour l’Éternité", VÉHÉMENCE do far more than revisit their debut, they reshape it into an even more immersive and emotionally powerful work. Blending triumphant melodies, raw black metal aggression, and deeply atmospheric folk elements, the album captures the spirit of medieval black metal in its purest and most majestic form. Epic, melancholic, and passionately composed, this is a record that feels timeless rather than nostalgic.
