VAEOVON – SPIRITUAL NULLIFICATION

Available now via Gutter Prince Cabal - This is one of those assignments where I approached the band without any prior familiarity—a perspective that allows for a more unfiltered and unbiased listening experience. In this case, the focus is on black metal group from New Zealand, VAEOVON, who mark their debut with their first full-length release, "Spiritual Nullification". According to the press release, the album is described as a relentless assault of lightning-fast, overwhelming in its sheer intensity. Driven by retching vocals and near-constant blast beats-only briefly pulling back to strike with even greater force-the record unfolds as a vortex of frenzied riffing that feels almost violent in its execution. The result is portrayed as a descent into chaos, a suffocating and uncompromising experience-like being dragged through hell by an unstoppable force, with no chance of escape. Whether "Spiritual Nullification" lives up to the ferocity promised in the press pitch is something this review will explore.

The album opens with 'I, Vaeovon', introducing an ominous and mysterious soundscape. Subtle, distorted guitar lines emerge from beneath the surface, shaping a sinister atmosphere that carries a lingering sense of anticipation-leaving the listener wondering what is about to unfold. 'Mantra Vitalis' distills Vaeovon’s sound into its most intense and unrelenting form. From the outset, fast drumming pushes the track forward, setting the stage for dense, abrasive guitar textures that crash against moments of fragile, spectral clarity. Rather than standing in opposition, these contrasts collide-fragility and brutality intertwined in constant tension. Over this shifting foundation, the vocals erupt with feral intensity, moving between demonic roars and tortured, high-pitched screams. What unfolds is a controlled storm of distortion and motion, where the riffing strikes with violent precision—relentless and deeply physical in impact. Yet beneath the onslaught, faintly ringing fragments persist, never fully swallowed, as if resisting collapse. As the track progresses, its internal logic begins to warp: the rhythm stumbles into a heavy pulse, the bass withdraws into a more reflective role, and the lead guitar cries out in long, strained phrases before collapsing into fractured movement.

‍

Continuing their descent into controlled chaos, 'Plague Reverence' and 'Death Proclamation' extend the album’s relentless push between extremes. Both tracks alternate between blast-driven violence and fragmented instrumental sections that feel increasingly hallucinatory. Within these shifting structures, bass lines drift in uneasy motion while sharp vocal outbursts cut through the density with sudden force. The effect is visceral-violent convulsions giving way to warped, dreamlike states where something dark and indistinct always lingers just beyond reach. 'Infernal Servitude' drags the album into one of its most volatile states, where tension never settles and every moment feels on the verge of collapse. Built on unstable grooves, the track teeters between control and chaos before erupting into dissonant guitars, punishing drums, and searing vocal aggression. What makes it even more unsettling is its fractured pacing-sudden halts, abrupt re-entries, and sharp cymbal accents that slice through the density like warning signals. The result is disorienting and overwhelming, marking one of the most unhinged passages so far, and hinting that VAEOVON are only escalating their descent into sonic chaos. 'Shadow Dissolution' pushes into even more extreme territory, both musically and vocally, embracing heightened chaos and macabre intensity while taking a darker narrative turn. At nearly nine minutes, it stands as the album’s longest and most varied composition, constantly shifting between unstable sonic states. The track overflows with delirium and hallucination, moving through passages where a scratchy, slithering lead guitar casts a chilling, chime-like spell—beautiful in form, yet steeped in unease. Rising keys and trembling guitars deepen the atmosphere of anguish, while distant roars and harrowing screams reinforce its emotional weight. In the end, VAEOVON closes the album with its title track, a synth-driven instrumental outro enriched by solemn pulses and grieving orchestral strings. Within this narrative, the protagonist’s fate is left without redemption—only a final descent into darkness.

‍

"Spiritual Nullification" is a suffocating and relentlessly intense debut that thrives on chaos, density, and extreme sonic pressure. While its overwhelming nature can verge on excess, VAEOVON succeeds in crafting a vividly disturbing and conceptually coherent statement that leaves a lasting, disorienting impact.
