TEXTURES - GENOTYPE

Out now via Kscope - After nearly a decade of silence, Textures return with Genotype, an album that rejects the weight of expectation and redraws the band’s creative perimeter. Marketed as the conceptual counterpart to 2016’s Phenotype, this is not a sequel and is far from a resurrection. Written from scratch and self-produced, Genotype reframes Textures as architects of controlled atmosphere, restraint, and melodic discipline.

The most immediate shift is compositional intent. Where earlier records thrived on abrasion and excess, Genotype prioritises space, pacing, and vocal presence. Daniël de Jongh sits at the centre of this record, his clean vocals carrying emotional weight with controlled precision. Harsh vocals appear sparingly, unleashed as punctuation. This recalibration will alienate listeners still chasing the volatility of Silhouettes, but it solidifies the band’s current identity.

‍

Forrester Savell’s mix gives the album width, allowing Uri Dijk’s keyboards to function as structural elements. Tracks “At The Edge Of Winter” and “Vanishing Twin” balance accessibility with tension, leaning toward prog-rock melodicism. “Measuring The Heavens” stretches patience deliberately, a long form exercise in deferred impact that rewards commitment.

Lyrically, Genotype speaks inward. Themes of alienation, neurodivergence, and internal fracture are presented without spectacle. This is not protest music or “self help” metal. It is observational, detached, and quietly empathetic. The closing “Walls Of The Soul” encapsulates the album’s strengths and flaws, landing expansively, completely immersive, and emotionally coherent.

‍

Genotype is far from a triumphant return or nostalgic victory lap. It’s a mature, controlled statement from a band no longer interested in proving relevance through aggression. Textures have chosen evolution over validation, and the result is measured, resolutely present, and a must listen for all.
