STELLAR ROT - Where the Formless Ones Dwell

We begin our journey with 'Through the Eternity Stairs', and despite its deadly speed and aggression, there is something incredibly beautiful hidden within its melodies. In my mind, the Eternity Stairs almost picture themselves: massive stone steps rising reverently above the clouds, monumental and strangely majestic. Sinister, Throaty vocals remain firmly present within the intense atmosphere, although one particular tone in the mix initially distracts from the otherwise immersive flow, perhaps deliberately? As the track progresses, repetitive melodies and the hypnotic interplay between guitars and drums create a trance-like atmosphere, almost like a sinister lullaby slowly drawing you towards the abyss. Particularly impressive are the melodic, leading drums and expressive guitar passages, which seem to take on a narrative role of their own around the vocal delivery.

Next up is 'Behold, The Crimson Path', opening with beautiful, almost angelic voices before sharp staccato riffs and driving drums break through. Cold, aggressive vocals quickly give the track a strong old-school black metal atmosphere, pushed forward by wild cymbal work. Things become particularly interesting when the aggression briefly retreats: raspy, almost warning-like whispers hover above clean guitar passages and subtle melodies, while those eerie angelic voices remain far in the background. Around the midpoint, the composition drifts into more melancholic territory, and the contrast gives the song additional emotional depth without weakening its darker character. Eventually, all restraint disappears as STELLAR ROT plunge back into a brutal, old-school black metal attack to bring the track to its end.

A more ambient approach awaits on 'Where Pestilence Mocks The Mortal', opening with church bells and what sounds like a deep, almost inhuman growl. A heavy riff emerges, while the vocals remain further back in the mix, but here, that distance works beautifully, creating the impression of something unknown slowly materialising in front of you. The riffs carry a striking sense of urgency and longing, before the bridge offers a moment to breathe through hypnotic drumming and melancholic guitars. If you want to understand what STELLAR ROT are creating with this record, this track is a must-listen.

'Miasmic Dipsomania' leads us into the final stretch of the album, almost immediately throwing us into a fiery pit of deep, pain-laden vocals. Clean guitars and initially slower drumming create a cinematic contrast, while the screams grow increasingly agonising as the track progresses. There is something deeply unsettling about the songwriting, with its raw melancholy slowly creeping into your mind rather than relying on aggression alone. But don’t be mistaken, underneath that sorrowful atmosphere, the rhythm section remains strong, fast and absolutely merciless.

We end this debut with 'Eternal Rites of the Lost', as a wall of wind breaks open into a chilling scream. By now, STELLAR ROT’s vocal approach is familiar: icy, unsettling and completely devoid of warmth. The initially slower drumming works particularly well here, giving the vocals room to dominate before becoming increasingly aggressive alongside them. Guitar and bass sit deeper in the mix, creating a brooding foundation that makes the harsher elements feel even more imposing. Towards the end, whispered spoken words transform into cold, sinister singing, intensifying the sense of fear and unease. A dark, imposing finale, both for the song and for the album.

With "Where the Formless Ones Dwell", STELLAR ROT delivers a remarkably immersive debut where icy black metal aggression meets haunting melodies and cinematic atmosphere. Pain-laden vocals, hypnotic drumming and melancholic guitars create a world that feels vast, sinister and strangely beautiful. Not every detail hits equally hard, but as a complete journey, this is a debut that gets under your skin and lingers there.
