Max Cavalera is on fire. Again. At a point where most metal vets are coasting, he’s unleashing Chama, Soulfly’s 13th album, and it to say if fucking rips is the understatement of the year. From Brazil to Arizona, tribal drums, and guttural vocals collide to create an album that is just absolutely thriving, dangerous, and utterly uncompromising.

The record opens with “Indigenous Inquisition,” a haunting nod to lost tribes and slaughtered peoples, setting a tone of reverence for what’s to come. Erupting into “Storm The Gates,” this banger is a punishing groove metal assault that stomps like Roots era Soulfly. Zyon Cavalera is a revelation behind the kit with every drum hit landing like a fucking warhammer, propelling the mayhem while Max’s guitars slice through with his signature bite.
Guest appearances only elevate the madness. Dino Cazares injects industrial precision into “No Pain = No Power,” Michael Amott shreds a solo on “Ghenna,” and Todd Jones spits on “Nihilist.” Despite the all star lineup, Soulfly never lose cohesion with everything in service of the album’s primal energy.
But Chama isn’t just a hammer to the face. The title track and Xiii explore tribal rhythms, chants, and grooves that pull you into a ritualistic, almost hypnotic world. There’s fire in every note, and the weight of Max’s decades long journey seared into the music.
By the time the album comes to a close, you’re battered, exhilarated, and oddly spiritual, showcasing that Soulfly are still the goddamn kings of tribal groove metal.
