SOOTHSAYER - THE UNBINDING

Release Date: 3 July 2026 via Apocalyptic Witchcraft - Blackened doom metal has always been a personal weakness, so seeing SOOTHSAYER on my review list was an easy choice. Since emerging from County Cork in 2013, the Irish band have taken a patient approach to songwriting, releasing only a handful of records, each carrying a distinct sense of purpose. Five years after "Echoes of the Earth", they returned with "The Unbinding", their second full-length and first release for Apocalyptic Witchcraft. Rooted in grief, tradition, and raw emotion, the album promises another immersive journey through towering doom soundscapes and haunting atmosphere.

'Eroding the Sky' opens with eerie, distant sounds that briefly suggest a restrained introduction. That impression is quickly shattered as SOOTHSAYER erupts into a storm of frantic drumming, jagged riffs, and raw, black metal-tinged screams. Beneath the relentless assault, subtle melodic lines weave through the dense instrumentation, adding depth to the track's oppressive atmosphere. The crushing momentum is momentarily interrupted by tortured screams and sinister ambience before the band plunge back into towering doom-laden riffs and thunderous percussion. It is a striking opener that balances overwhelming heaviness with a haunting sense of melancholy, revealing beauty not through comfort, but through desolation. 'Sooner Acceptance' leans fully into the melancholic heart of the album. SOOTHSAYER crafts a crushing yet emotionally charged soundscape, where sorrow seeps through every layer of the dense instrumentation. The slow, dragging vocal performance carries a palpable sense of pain and despair, while the restrained drumming quietly guides the composition without demanding attention. A thick, resonant bass line gives the track additional weight, pairing perfectly with the throat-ripping screams that emerge throughout. The result is both captivating and unsettling, culminating in a mysterious fade-out that leaves the song suspended in lingering darkness. 'Endless Shesha' contains one of the album’s most crushing riffs, its immense weight dissolving into a wall of thick fuzz that perfectly complements the song’s oppressive atmosphere. SOOTHSAYER allows the composition to unfold with remarkable patience, its almost ritualistic pulse gradually gathering momentum before agonized screams once again tear through the mix. What makes the track particularly compelling is the balance between overwhelming atmosphere and sheer force: merciless drumming, tortured vocals, and monolithic riffs coexist without one ever overshadowing the other. A sinister spoken-word passage near the bridge further deepens the song’s haunting character.

‍

'The Vine' begins with ominous sounds before a brief guitar passage and a spine-chilling scream usher in one of the album’s heaviest moments. SOOTHSAYER builds the track around a slow, brooding atmosphere that feels both oppressive and emotionally charged. Giving the track an unsettling sense of psychological collapse. It is a song that feels as though it is slowly unraveling from within, each section adding to the tension rather than relieving it. Tortured vocal outbursts repeatedly break through the dense soundscape, creating a sense of inner turmoil and unease. The standout vocal performance, expressive drumming, and more prominent bass work combine to make 'The Vine' one of the album’s most captivating tracks. Closing the album is 'A Vague Shimmer', a sprawling thirteen-minute finale that serves as the emotional and atmospheric culmination of the record. The track unfolds with remarkable patience, moving between towering crescendos and introspective passages that continually deepen its emotional impact. Ritualistic vocal roars deepen the song’s mystical character, while the interplay of hypnotic drumming, mournful melodies, and varied vocal textures gradually draws the listener into a near-trance-like state. Few tracks on the album capture its emotional weight so completely; the sense of grief and heaviness feels almost tangible. The closing chants provide a fitting final chapter, bringing "The Unbinding" to an evocative and deeply satisfying conclusion.

‍

With The Unbinding, Soothsayer delivers a deeply immersive doom metal experience built on crushing heaviness, haunting atmosphere, and genuine emotional weight. The band balances moments of raw aggression with passages of melancholy and introspection, creating a record that feels both powerful and deeply personal.
