Available now via Vicious Instinct Records - Brutality. Perversion. Skull-crushing riffs. Disgusting and horrific nightmares conjured in your mind’s eye. What more could you ask for? All this and more is to be found in Slaughtercult’s newest album Devoured by Perversion. This album is an exercise in bestial carnage, further kept alive with appearances from multiple guest musicians such as Marvin Ruiz of Devourment and Elfi Davis of Kraanium.

Overall, The album is a compact experience: 11 tracks, each rather short and straight to the point. In totality, it provides a time-efficient experience of brutality without overstaying its welcome. This is of course a refreshing shift from many albums which, due to their long run times, seem to drag on just a tad too long. As such, I very much appreciate Slaughtercult’s restraint. They’re created an album that comes to tackle you to the ground, beat the ever-loving s&!t out of you, before moving on just as suddenly as it arrived. It’s quite beautiful, really.
The album opens with Birthing Ceremony - a choking onslaught of rhythmic riffs and staccato-like growls played to perfection. The track seems to have only one goal in mind: to ramp up with every passing second until its abrupt end.
Next is Repulsed by Your Haggard Appearance. One word comes to mind with this tack: heavy. Frantic blast beats and squealing guitars keep up a pace so manic that it might just make the listener feel exhausted trying to keep up.
Next up is Perverse Bestial Lactation featuring Marvin Ruiz of Devourment. This track sounds as perverse and as bestial as its name implies. Animalistic growls grumble over a cacophony of drums and guitars. What surprised me most about this track was its chilling atmosphere, made all the stronger by a short but impactful guitar solo that gave the track list a much-appreciated tone shift.
A particularly enjoyable track was Menstrual Marinade featuring Elfi Davis of Kraanium. The combination of ultra deep vocals and gallop-like rhythm intertwined remarkably well and created a sound that can only be described as invigorating yet groovy.
Another track worth mentioning is Pool of Bile. Succinct in execution, this track scrunched my face into a knot as all good metal tracks should. Head nodding as I sat in a sunlit room, I couldn’t help but lose myself in the pulsating mania.
There are plenty of brutal death metal fans who want their subgenre to be a solid wall of sound with a consistent energy and soundscape. For fans of Dying Fetus or Cannibal Corpse this album will no doubt be a nice addition to your collection.
One thing is certain: I feel sore just thinking about the sort of pit that this album would spawn at a live gig. Go forth headbangers and give Devoured by Perversion a listen. A delicious assault awaits.
