SICARIUS-NEX

Available now via Adirondack Black Mass - Emerging in early 2014, SICARIUS were founded by Argyris and Carnage with a clear mission: to capture the raw aggression and unrelenting spirit of black metal. Influenced by both first-and second-wave pioneers from Scandinavia, Greece, and the United States, the band channels these roots into a sound that feels both reverent and confrontational. Rather than adhering strictly to tradition, SICARIUS expand their sonic palette by incorporating elements of thrash, death metal, goth, and rock, creating a hybrid style that amplifies their intensity while maintaining a sharp, aggressive edge. In the years that followed their formation, SICARIUS began carving out their presence with early releases such as the Scorch the Earth demo (2015) and their debut album Serenade of Slitting Throats, produced by Mick Kenney. These formative works marked the beginning of their ascent, drawing increasing attention within the extreme metal underground. As their momentum grew, so too did their reach, leading them to share stages with influential acts such as 1349, GOATWHORE, VADER, MARDUK, DISGORGE, and INCANTATION—each performance further solidifying their place within the harsh and uncompromising landscape of extreme metal.

The album opens with 'Cold Death', shifting almost instantly from an atmospheric introduction into furious, high-speed drumming and raw, abrasive guitar work. The vocal interplay between guitarist Argyris and vocalist Akéfalos proves particularly effective, with one delivering deep, primal growls while the other counters with higher-pitched, venomous screams. Clear influences from genre titans such as ROTTING CHRIST and MAYHEM can be detected, though SICARIUS filter these through their own distinct identity. As the track progresses, slower, more dragging passages emerge toward the end, adding weight and atmosphere to an already intense opening statement. The previously mentioned thrash influences become particularly evident in the melodic guitar-driven opening of 'Opened Obsidian Gateways'. From there, the track shifts in intensity and tempo, yet remains tightly unified through a cohesive sonic approach. Throaty, visceral screams blend seamlessly with relentless blast beat drumming, while the guitars remain sharp and cutting without overpowering the mix. A standout feature emerges in the form of staccato riffing, which adds a tight, percussive edge and becomes one of the track’s most compelling elements. 'Banshee' opens with a slow, dragging introduction before gradually picking up momentum. The deliberate pacing works particularly well for the track, highlighting the band’s ability to build atmosphere and control tension effectively. Rather than rushing into intensity, the song allows its weight to unfold naturally, showcasing a strong sense of dynamics and restraint.

‍

The complete opposite follows with 'Daggers Down', where the tempo increases significantly and the track reveals a higher degree of intricacy. Driven by heightened energy, the song embraces a more aggressive pace while layering in additional detail and nuance throughout its structure. The drumming stands out as exceptional here, anchoring the composition with precision and force. At the same time, the integration of thrash and death metal elements becomes more apparent, fitting seamlessly into the song’s overall intensity and enhancing its impact. Following the short melodic interlude 'Ambuscade', which sets a haunting, almost ritualistic atmosphere underscored by a subtle, heartbeat-like pulse, the album moves directly into its title track and closer, 'Nex', featuring MAYHEM guitarist Charles Hedger. Distorted guitars slowly emerge from the distance before surging into the forefront, unfolding into a heavy, deliberate soundscape. The dual vocal approach, enhanced with reverb, adds depth to the melodic framework, while the piercing screams of Akéfalos cut sharply through the mix, commanding attention. As a finale, the track encapsulates the band’s strengths, culminating in a standout guitar solo by Charles Hedger that reinforces the song’s weight and leaves a lasting impression.
