Sev Lezu - Blood Conscript

'…Into Darkness' opens the gates to the world of SEV LEZU, with angelic, floating voices accompanied by what sounds like a carriage slowly moving across gravel. The atmosphere is established almost immediately, but beneath those ethereal voices another, noticeably darker presence begins to emerge. As the intro progresses, that shadow gradually takes over, signalling a change in mood and suggesting that whatever awaits beyond the darkness will be far less welcoming.

The real assault begins with 'The Stillborn', as cascades of crushing blast beats rain down while a melodic riff fights its way through the chaos. When the drums and guitars briefly pull back, the vocals finally take centre stage, delivering throaty, venomous screams that fit the black/death attack perfectly. Unfortunately, they sit a little too far back in the mix at times and are occasionally overshadowed by the instrumentation. Still, the sheer intensity makes 'The Stillborn' a fierce introduction to the album.

Next up is title track 'Blood Conscript', which pushes the album noticeably further into death metal territory. The riffs become more melodic while retaining a dirty, abrasive edge, perfectly matching the increasingly aggressive vocal delivery. Together, these elements give the track considerably more bite, yet beneath all that hostility lies an infectious, almost anthemic quality. Sometimes you simply want to raise your fist and follow along and 'Blood Conscript' is exactly that kind of song.

Interlude 'The Ritual of Bone and Blade' offers a brief escape from the aggression, surrounding the listener with eerie melodies and a lingering sense of uncertainty. As the piece unfolds, an almost trance-like feeling begins to take hold, adding another layer of depth to the album's dark, ritualistic world. Somewhere within the atmosphere, what sounds like the distant call of a crow can be heard, making the whole scene feel even more ominous.

We end our journey with 'Man’s Evil Gift', where a dark, brooding riff and wild cymbal-driven drumming lead us into the album's final chapter. For me, the closer showcases better than any other track how effectively SEV LEZU combines black metal's sinister vocals, atmosphere and darkness with death metal aggression and groove. As the end approaches, the music takes on an almost uncertain character, leaving you with the feeling of wondering what might still lie ahead. A fitting and strangely unresolved ending to a great debut.

With "Blood Conscript", SEV LEZU delivers a solid debut where black metal darkness meets death metal aggression, groove and melodic riffing. Ritualistic interludes add welcome depth to the relentless attack, while dirty guitars and venomous vocals shape its hostile character. Not every element leaves the same lasting impression and the mix occasionally works against the vocals, but the band's vision is clearly there. Blood Conscript is a promising first step with plenty of room to grow.
