From the stable of Grave Island Records comes Ukrainian death slammers, SECTARIAN DEFACEMENT and their debut album, Hostile Consuming Rapture. Recorded in difficult times and circumstances due to their nation's struggles. It comes as no surprise the result of their work manifests as extremely heavy and utterly brutal. The trio of Nazar (guitar and vocals), Viktor (drums), and Anton (bass guitar) have created a half hour amplitude across ten arrangements succinctly articulating themes of survival, corruption, grief and loss.

Immediately from the opening slabs on Sectarian Ritual (Appalling Oath) the psyche is primed for the incoming thunder and uncompromising weight. Employing a tight rhythm section and an aggressive raw throated presence of deep growls, the punishing Mob Justice has me all in and ready for further beatings to come. The quieter interludes of Mental Putrefaction, and the eerie dirge of Dismal Liturgy are both somewhat metaphorical reminders that solemn distractions are welcomed opportunities to recover and reflect.
Dominated by low-end distortions, the guitars on the title track (Hostile Consuming Rapture) are grimy and dense with the fluidity of double-timed shredding combined with choppy breakdowns. Hitting with slabs of toxic plasma and narcotic ooze, Puddle of Gore adds to this audible viscosity with ultra seismic bass tones of undiscerning libations resulting in gut churning symptoms. With the mid-paced crusher of Famine, we face an assault of bruising drums and percussive blasts commanding the impetus of drop-tuned riffage arriving from both flanks. Fans of German death merchants Defeated Sanity may appreciate the cover of Sutee that closes out this sonic annihilation, a devastating ode which adds to my applause and credit.
Seemingly, there are influences of early 2000's goregrind to modern death metal resounding in my perceptions of this album, with notable lashings of Regurgitate, Dead Infection, Devourment and Brodequin vibes all being strongly felt within the band’s heavy chug-alongs, solid rhythms and intense vocal assortations. Hostile Consuming Rapture is a dark expression of resilience as seen through the harsh lens of conflict. A fierce musical anecdote of challenging modern times.
