SCORDATURA - LED INTO OBLIVION

Out now via Everlasting Spew Records - Scotland has never lacked in good quality death metal, & Scordatura have spent the best part of two decades proving they belong beyond the limits of their local scene. Six years after Mass Failure, the Glasgow quartet return with Led Into Oblivion, an album that lands without sacrificing so much as an ounce of violence. Rather than chasing the bandwagon of increasingly convoluted technicality, Scordatura knuckle down with sharp riffs, tight transitions & bursts of speed that make this collection of songs hit hard.

Built around the accelerating dependence on technology & AI, Led Into Oblivion mirrors the subject with precision & intensity. Across ten tracks, (including the brief introductory piece “Doomed to Fate”), the band wastes no time. The majority of songs barely cross the three minute mark, but each feels complete, packed with rhythmic twists & momentum that leave an impact.

‍

The title track lays it all on the line, alternating blast beats with mid tempo sections that land solid like concrete. “Oppressed Repressed” is by far the record's strongest moment, showcasing razor tremolo picking & groove heavy breakdowns. Elsewhere, “A Manic Indoctrination” slows the pace just enough to let this monster breathe, while “When the Red Moon Hangs Low” & “Begging to Die” close the record with relentless control.

‍

Performances are exceptional throughout. Tam Moran’s drumming is explosive, & Owen McKendrick’s technical guitar work delivers moments of memorable songwriting. Daryl Boyce’s cavernous vocals stay commanding from start to finish, supported by Liam McCafferty’s thick, articulate bass presence.

The production on this record also deserves recognition. Malcolm Abbou’s mix captures every detail without polishing away any raw edges, & Korentin Men' s mastering gives the album clarity & weight in equal measure.

‍

Scordatura have simply refined death metal to an impressive degree. Focused, and uncompromising, Led Into Oblivion stands as the band’s strongest to date, arriving as one of this year’s most convincing examples of modern brutal death metal.
