SANCTVS - De l'Abîme au Plérôme

Sanctvs, the solo project from Montreal, Quebec, Canada, has previously caught the attention of this zine, and with his 2025 album De l’Abîme au Plérôme, he returns with an uncompromising vision of black metal. Set for release on January 30th via Osmose Productions, the record channels a relentless aggression while weaving a dark, immersive atmosphere that defines the project. Across the album, Sanctvs fuses raw intensity with carefully crafted layers, creating a soundscape that is as challenging as it is captivating, promising to leave a lasting mark on fans of extreme metal.

The album opens with a brooding, oppressive weight, immediately drawing the listener into its dark world. The riffs, while heavy and unrelenting, carry subtle melodic undercurrents that prevent the sound from becoming monolithic, giving each passage a sense of depth and texture. Many of the tracks are expansive, epic in scope, allowing the instruments to fully breathe and demonstrate their power—each guitar chord, bass pulse, and drum strike resonating with clarity and impact. When the tempo accelerates, blistering blast beats and rapid-fire drumming inject a sense of urgency, pushing the compositions into thrilling, almost cinematic territory. The careful balance between melody, heaviness, and technical precision ensures the album never feels monotonous, instead presenting a fully realised and immersive black metal experience that rewards attentive listening. Tremolo-picked riffs propel the faster sections with a sharp, almost feral intensity, giving the songs a raw, visceral edge. The vocals are predominantly furious black-metal shrieks, but they are delivered with precision and variation, adding layers of menace and emotional weight. Most of the album is firmly rooted in modern black metal, yet it retains an undercurrent of old-school aggression, bridging eras in a way that feels both fresh and familiar. Guitar solos and leads cut through the dense arrangements with chaotic yet melodic flair, creating moments of tension and release. On one track, the listener is even treated to a brief interlude of clean guitar and spoken-word passages, offering a striking contrast to the otherwise relentless assault. The combination of epic song lengths, dynamic riffing, and carefully placed atmospheric touches ensures that each track feels like a journey—dark, intense, and thoroughly engaging from start to finish.

On this recording, Sanctvs delivers a modern, aggressive take on black metal that feels both intense and meticulously crafted. The production emphasises a raw, shadowy atmosphere, allowing each instrument to cut through with weight and clarity. Tremolo-picked riffs and fast-paced passages lend the tracks a feral edge, while the chaotic yet melodic guitar leads add depth and unpredictability. Vocals are delivered in furious black-metal shrieks, perfectly conveying the anger and darkness that permeate the album. The French-language lyrics further enrich the experience, delving into themes of occultism, death, devotion, and transformation, giving the music an esoteric and almost ritualistic undertone. Even when the songs slow or incorporate brief passages of clean playing and spoken word, the intensity never wanes, demonstrating a keen sense of pacing and dynamic contrast. With this release, Sanctvs proves to be a compelling force in contemporary black metal, bridging modern aggression with traditional influences while crafting an immersive, darkly atmospheric journey for the listener. Sanctvs delivers another commanding effort with De l’Abîme au Plérôme, proving once again that they have a firm grasp on both the ferocity and the atmosphere that define modern black metal. The album balances relentless speed and aggression with moments of haunting melody, underpinned by raw, dark production that perfectly complements the thematic weight of the songs. French lyrics explore occultism, death, devotion, and transformation, adding a layer of mystique and intellectual depth to the sonic assault. Standout tracks such as 'Rex Hominum' and 'La Lumière de l’Infini' exemplify the project’s skill in fusing chaotic riffs, tremolo-driven intensity, and occasional melodic or spoken interludes, keeping the listener engaged across longer, epic compositions.

For fans of high-energy, modern black metal that still respects the genre’s raw roots, this is a release not to be missed.
