ROTTEN SOUND - Mass Extinction

Hailing from Finland, ROTTEN SOUND has unleashed their 11th ep, Mass Extinction on Season of Mist. Recorded and released in 2025, this lineup features its two original members since 1993, Keijo Niinimaa (vocals) and Mika Aalto (guitar), along with Sami Latva (drums, 2006 – present), and Matti Raapana (bass, 2021 – present). The band has been a constant force in the extreme music realms for many years and with a solid international following they aren’t showing any signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Adding to their already impressive back catalogue, this is an onslaught of eight songs that rattles the clock at around the ten-minute mark that even your neighbours should appreciate while you have it on repeat. Being true to the art of grind, their songs are faithful to their formula with each track offering something different to the next. A devastating mix of short, fast, blasts, catchy breakdowns, some mid-tempo riffage, the trademark deep raw-throat vocals, plus a few samples thrown in, the result blends nicely to create an unrelenting sonic whirlpool these guys are best known for.

‍

Armed with their response on the current social and political landscapes, and mankind’s industrial neglect of fragile environments, the songs are pissed off and angry yet carried with the purpose of what grind initially stands for while not overstepping the mark. The vocal delivery is direct and on point and there’s no faffing about here on the lyrical content. Throw in generous slabs of the classic Scandinavian chainsaw guitar sound, a deep grizzling bass tone, and the machinegun-drum battering, this will no doubt please those seeking to keep their distortion diets in check.

‍

‍

With a thirty plus year career, older heads will be familiar with the band's approach and delivery, and newer audiences looking to seek them out won’t be disappointed either. Fans of Napalm Death, Nasum, Retaliation, Mortify and so on, will appreciate the brutality that is served up here.

SCORE 9/10
