ORBITA - Farewell to All We’ve Lost
Release Date: October 9 via Aural Music - A fairly new band to the scene, Farewell to All We’ve Lost marks the first full-length release from Italian dark/doom metallers Orbita since their beginnings in 2020. It’s been three years since their original demo release, which was very much traditional stoner metal. Now they step into a new era with new members, creating a new, darker production with echoes back to older genres. Though this debut album is four tracks, it is roughly 40 minutes in length, marking a very interesting debut.
“Rotten Flowers” kicks off with heavy, stoner-doom riffs and a sinister sound. Despite the heaviness, it is something of a relaxing song, lulling the listener into an in-depth, transcendent journey. What follows is a slow descent, a calm state of being with some sadness and grit.
“Nèkyia” has a hollow melancholy, with grungy, discordant riffs that bring about a share of the experimental, paired with paced drumming and harmonic echoes. It takes its time, flowing into the heavier midway.
Steeping further into atmosphere, “Marble Veil” is haunting, with Gionni’s echoed vocals and sustained riffs from guitarist Matt. Virgile’s bass adds so much to the intro of this piece, creating so much ambience before vocals kick in midway.
Finale “The Spear” strikes down heavier with strong percussion from Nunzio and fierce, roaring vocals, adopting more of a doom influence and shifting halfway through. It’s an epic song to finish on at fourteen minutes long. Overall, Farewell to All We’ve Lost has a balance to it, reflectively mellow one moment and intensely oppressive the next.
Bass is full of vibration, drums well-paced, vocals echo melancholy while riffs are downright full of that doom-stoner weight. It’s a tight production with plenty to reflect upon. Orbita embraces the psyche with crushing riffs and intensity, creating a hypnotic soundscape to dwell upon and contemplate. To those who give it an in-depth listen, it is bound to provide some a mental catharsis.
