Emerging from the shadows of Germany's Black Forest, NOCTURNIS have steadily established themselves within the underground black metal scene through their atmospheric intensity and historically inspired storytelling. Formed in 2019, the five-piece first attracted attention with their debut EP, Aporia (2020), before further developing their musical identity on their first full-length, Unsegen (2022). Now, four years later, the band return with their sophomore album, Drangsal, an ambitious concept record that seeks to unite music, lyrics and visual aesthetics into a cohesive artistic vision. Produced and recorded by guitarist Vincent Padrutt, with mixing and mastering handled by Nikita Kamprad, the album promises another step in the band's creative evolution. But can NOCTURNIS successfully transform their historical inspirations and atmospheric ambitions into a compelling musical experience? Let's venture into the darkness and find out.

Our first encounter with Drangsal comes through the atmospheric introduction 'Liturgie', a brief, one-minute composition that lures the listener into a deceptive sense of tranquillity. Gentle yet ominous piano melodies establish an unsettling atmosphere, suggesting that something far darker is waiting beneath the surface. As the piece progresses, a layer of static noise gradually emerges, growing increasingly prominent until it partially drowns out the delicate piano notes. This subtle transformation creates a lingering sense of unease, making ‘Liturgie’ an intriguing introduction to the darkness that lies ahead.
'Tituba' immediately introduces sharp guitar riffs, a dragging sonic foundation and rapid drumming. Brief chanting passages give way to venomous screams that hang over the instrumentation like a sinister shadow, creating an almost ritualistic atmosphere. Particularly captivating is how the sound becomes increasingly suffocating as the composition progresses, with haunting choral voices adding another layer of darkness. The true highlight, however, arrives towards the end, where a beautifully tragic guitar solo cuts through the oppressive atmosphere, introducing an emotional depth that genuinely moves me. A powerful combination of black metal ferocity and haunting melancholy.
'Düsternis' immediately unleashes heavily distorted, reverberating guitar riffs accompanied by relentless blast beats. The vocals hiss their way through the composition with throaty precision, adding a particularly venomous character to the already oppressive atmosphere. Especially impressive is the interplay within the rhythm section, where guitars and drums work together with remarkable intensity and cohesion. Around the bridge, the sound takes on an almost doom-laden quality, introducing a darker, heavier dimension to the production. This subtle shift in atmosphere provides a welcome contrast to the relentless aggression, making ‘Düsternis’ another compelling contribution to the album's sinister character.
'Das Licht Der Nächsten Sonne' takes another atmospheric approach, introducing the sound of galloping hooves and a bell before launching into an uptempo composition. Initially, the unusual main riff throws me off slightly, but considering the lyrical themes of descending into madness, its unsettling character begins to make perfect sense. As the song progresses, the atmosphere grows increasingly sinister, reflected in the darker guitar work and prominent bass lines. Towards the end, forceful drumming accompanies a beautifully executed dual-guitar solo that adds remarkable emotional depth. Eventually, the intensity fades into near silence, leaving behind a delicate clean guitar passage that brings the composition to a haunting conclusion.
'Dämmernis' follows a similarly atmospheric direction, beginning with gentle, melancholic melodies before suddenly erupting into thunderous blast beats and crushing guitar riffs. Despite their brutal and sinister character, the vocals adopt a remarkably narrative quality, carrying an underlying sense of sorrow and anguish that adds considerable emotional depth. The contrast between relentless aggression and haunting melancholy gives the composition a particularly captivating atmosphere. Eventually, the ferocity subsides, allowing the song to return to the same delicate, almost folk-like melodies that introduced it. A beautifully structured composition that demonstrates how effectively NOCTURNIS combines raw black metal intensity with genuine emotional expression.
Our journey concludes with the title track, 'Drangsal', a raw yet deeply atmospheric expression of black metal, showcasing remarkable musicianship and passionate vocal delivery. The instrumentation strikes with tremendous force, at times feeling like the musical embodiment of a heavy burden resting upon one's shoulders. Accusatory, anger-filled screams dominate the composition, while subtle melodies weave through its relentless aggression. The bridge offers a moment of reflection, returning to the calm yet ominous atmosphere of the album's beginning. When an eerie, almost angelic humming emerges, its fragile beauty sends shivers down my spine. Moments later, the band plunges back into an almost epic display of rapid-fire instrumentation, bringing this emotionally intense journey to a magnificent conclusion.
With Drangsal, NOCTURNIS deliver an intensely atmospheric and emotionally compelling black metal experience. Ferocious blast beats, heavily distorted riffs and venomous vocals create an oppressive foundation, while haunting melodies, melancholic passages and beautifully expressive guitar solos introduce remarkable emotional depth. Particularly impressive is the band's ability to balance uncompromising aggression with moments of fragile beauty, allowing the compositions to unfold with a genuine sense of purpose. Although some unconventional riffing initially requires adjustment, its unsettling character ultimately complements the album's darker themes. From its ominous introduction to its magnificent finale, Drangsal is a powerful journey through anguish, darkness and haunting melancholy that leaves a lasting impression.
