Available now via Hells Headbangers - On their third full-length, Nocturnal Departure advances everything they established on Clandestine Theurgy without diluting hostility. The result, a record tightening control while preserving the volatility central to late ’90s North American black metal.

The shift lies in its execution. With Folterer on guitars and Hexzul on drums, the band’s sound gains clarity. Big riffs no longer blurring into atmosphere, rather articulating intent. Tremolo lines absolutely cut, expanding into deliberate, layered phrases. The drumming, in turn, abandons rigidity for momentum, with blast sections breathing, tempos pivoting, and transitions landing with pure intent.
Tracks “Altars of Evocation” and the title piece demonstrate their recalibration. Violence remains as foundation, but it is meticulously shaped. Melodic leads emerge as counterweight, threading through the density without softening any blows. Even the occasional restraint (clean passages, mid paced sequences) serves up moments of tension.
The album retains a raw, abrasive edge, yet avoids any kind of obscurity that often undermines similar releases. Each instrument occupies space, never compromising the oppressive atmosphere.
Thematically, Spiritual Cessation adheres to familiar terrain - ritual, death, & transcendence through negation. What is most distinct is its coherence. The record sustains a unified mood minus stagnation, moving through 8 tracks with a sense of progression often absent in strictly traditionalist approaches.
This is no departure from origins, but rather intentional consolidation. Nocturnal Departure sharpens their identity blade into something controlled, exacting, and ultimately more effective. Repeat listens incoming.
