MYVALYIR – THE PAST TALES

AVAILABLE NOW via INDEPENDENT - For a band so new, MÝVALYĬR arrive with confidence on their debut full-length, "The Past Tales", which was released independently on February 27th, 2026. From pandemic isolation to a full band in 2023, UK band MÝVALYĬR arrives with a debut that balances tradition and innovation. Firmly rooted in melodic death metal, the band expanded the boundaries of the genre by combining it with folk and orchestral textures, violin, cello, and nyckelharpa. This adds depth and emotional weight to their riffs and general soundscape. Following the late-2025 singles 'Reign' and 'Recollection', the album "The Past Tales" presents a concept album exploring conflict on personal, cultural, and historical levels. Ambitious and immersive, the record announces MÝVALYĬR as a band with vision, technical skill, and a distinctive, layered sound. MÝVALYĬR consists of Dale Pountney on bass, Kai Boyce on lead guitar, Stephen Wilkinson on drums, Joe Clayton on guitar and backing vocals, Kain on vocals, and Natalie Fluess, who contributes keyboards, violin, nyckelharpa, and additional backing vocals. This diverse lineup brings a wide range of textures and expertise, helping to shape the band’s rich, layered sound.

Before diving into the music, it’s worth noting the striking artwork accompanying "The Past Tales". Created by Felipe Machado Franco, known for his work with BLIND GUARDIAN and RHAPSODY OF FIRE, the visuals perfectly complement the album’s epic and layered sound, setting the stage for the musical journey that follows. The album opens with one of the previously released singles, 'Requiem', an atmospheric introduction that immediately showcases the orchestral depth of Natalie’s instrumental contributions. The violin blends seamlessly with heavy guitar riffs, creating a dark, almost cinematic narrative-a fitting gateway into the world of "The Past Tales".'Recollection', which was the other track released in advance, follows seamlessly and expands the sound palette with melancholic keyboard lines and evocative string passages. Kai Boyce’s lead guitar really stands out, delivering melodic solos that further underline the track’s epic atmosphere. Despite its layered arrangement, the song remains accessible, conveying a sense of reflection, loss, and memory-which is fitting with its title. The momentum intensifies with 'Reign', as the band pushes the energy. Aggressive riffs intertwine with orchestral elements to create a powerful and cohesive sound. The tight rhythmic interplay between bass and forceful drums provides a solid foundation for Joe Clayton’s guitar work, while Kain’s shifts between deep, dark growls and clean vocals add both drama and additional layers to the track. A balanced production ensures that each instrument has room to shine without overcrowding the overall mix.

At the core of the record are the two title-track pieces, 'The Past Tales'. Part I opens with restrained, almost ballad-like tones, as Natalie Fluess’ nyckelharpa and cello introduce a subtle Celtic undertone before the arrangement gradually swells into an orchestral peak. Part II continues the narrative with heightened dramatic tension and shifting dynamics, blending progressive elements into the melodic death metal framework. Together, the two tracks form a cohesive epic, where rich instrumentation and harsh yet fitting vocals bring past and present into dialogue. The album closes with 'Renascence', bringing its journey to a striking conclusion. Here, all the key elements converge: melancholic melodies, epic guitar lines, orchestral textures, and dynamic drumming. The track offers space for reflection and resolution while retaining the energy that has defined the record from the very first note. It is a fitting finale, rounding out the thematic narrative with both grace and impact.
