Out now via Everlasting Spew Records - Eight years away could have easily buried Lago beneath the endless churn of modern death metal, but Vigil arrives completely controlled and ready for demolition. The Phoenix quartet return sharper, and far more confident in the space they occupy. Where Sea of Duress leaned into atmosphere and weight, Vigil tightens things up with a colder, more technical approach that never sacrifices impact.

This album thrives on tension. Every riff feels designed to unsettle, and does so just as planned. The influence of Immolation, Morbid Angel and mid era Gorguts is a little obvious, but Lago steer clear of collapsing into imitation, with the songwriting remaining grounded in their own style of restraint. Moving like shifting concrete slabs, the tracklist hits slow enough to feel dangerous.
Guitarists Jacobsen and Barr build on the record’s identity through spiralling lead work, and riffs that constantly shapeshift. The solos cut deep through chaos with surreal clarity, occasionally drifting into melodic territory before being dragged back into the thickness of it all. Beneath the surface, Thomas’ bass work holds the low end, while Miller’s drumming becomes the album’s real engine. His performance - never settling into repetition.
Vocally, the growls and screams of Vigil land with hostility, buried deep within the mix like another instrument clawing for space. A decision that obviously works in the albums favour.
The discipline in Vigil is what separates this one from the pack. Lago almost never overplay. They know when to let things breathe, and more importantly, when to suffocate the listener completely. The result, an album that steers clear of becoming exhausting.
