KÕDU – KIRJAD SÕGEDATE KÜLAST

Available now via Antiq - KÕDU, is already a notable name within the Baltic scene, specialized in epic, melodic black metal, now with "Kirjad Sõgedate Külast" ("Letters from the Village of the Blind"), the Estonian band unveil their second full-length, building on the foundation laid by their 2021 debut "Unusta kõik". Inspired by a 1955 work from author Juhan Smuul, the album takes shape as a concept-driven narrative. Told through imagined letters from a remote village teetering on the edge of collapse, the record delves into themes of isolation, superstition, and moral decline. It’s an ambitious framework that calls for equally evocative musical execution. Operating within the realm of epic melodic black metal, KÕDU continue to carve out a distinct identity within the Baltic scene, positioning this release as a significant step forward in their artistic development. With this release marking the next step in the band’s evolution, we now turn to the music itself.

Rather than launching into full force, KÕDU ease the listener in with 'I', a brief yet evocative introduction built around a tremolo-driven lead guitar. Soft, almost weightless symphonic layers surround the melody like a pale shimmer, giving the opening a fragile, suspended quality. This delicate balance is quickly disrupted as 'II' takes over, carrying the melodic motif forward while expanding it into a fuller, more imposing soundscape. With the entrance of strained, anguished vocals, the atmosphere darkens abruptly-what once felt distant and ethereal now turns immediate and unsettling. The instrumentation follows suit, gaining density and urgency. The vocals, in particular, stand at the center of the composition, at times overpowering the surrounding elements. Extended quieter passages place them in stark relief, turning them into the dominant narrative voice. While this creates a haunting tension, the contrast between restraint and extremity occasionally feels pushed to its limits, bordering on excess. A sense of duality continues to shape the album in 'III', though here it leans more heavily toward restraint than impact. The track unfolds with a delicate, almost archaic melody, carried by a traditional string instrument and underpinned by subdued, down-tuned guitars. While the atmosphere remains consistently present, the piece itself feels detached from the raw essence of black metal, but with the concept in mind, it makes sense that it feels detached. The tortured vocal delivery adds a compelling layer to the composition.

Shifting away from the harsher textures preceding it, 'IV' unfolds as a moment of near-stillness within the album’s progression. An angelic choir, paired with finely detailed instrumentation, creates a serene, weightless atmosphere that can feel almost trance-like when fully absorbed. Entirely instrumental, the piece is graceful and immersive, yet its position within the tracklist feels somewhat unexpected. At this stage, a more forceful or confrontational direction might have provided greater contrast and impact. 'V' moves even deeper into ambient territory, which makes the sudden intrusion of hellish, distorted, and pain-soaked vocals feel somewhat out of place at first. Highly melodic passages are layered against inhuman, almost unnatural vocal textures, creating a stark contrast that evokes both unease and frustration. However, viewed through the lens of the album’s conceptual framework, one begins to question whether this apparent disorder is deliberate-an intentional expression of instability rather than a structural imbalance. 'VI' and 'VII' guide the listener into the final stretch of the album. “VI” stands out through a more pronounced use of synthesizers and a slightly more aggressive approach in both tone and composition. Throughout the record, the sinister and tortured vocal delivery remains a compelling constant, adding cohesion to the album’s shifting soundscapes. The closer, 'VII' shifts into a lighter, more melancholic soundscape, leaning toward ambient textures rather than raw black metal. Still, its sense of nostalgia and fragility fits the album’s concept well, as if it naturally fades into its conclusion. Near the end, the tempo briefly rises again, though a subtle tonal element feels slightly out of place-hard to define, yet noticeably lingering.

‍

KÕDU deliver a conceptually ambitious and atmospherically rich album that thrives on contrast, blending melancholic ambience with bursts of black metal intensity. While not every experimental turn lands with equal impact, the record succeeds in creating a distinctive and immersive narrative world that lingers well beyond its runtime.
