FROZEN CROWN - The Legend of the Six Kings

Release date: 2 October via Napalm Records - Six musicians, six albums and now six kings, coincidence or destiny? Italian power metallers FROZEN CROWN return on October 2 with The Legend of the Six Kings, their latest chapter and another step into the fantasy worlds that have long surrounded their music. Released through Napalm Records, the ten-track album takes a more narrative approach than its predecessors, drawing inspiration from Tolkien while steering the band's familiar combination of heavy and power metal into slightly darker territory. Epic melodies, three-guitar harmonies and battles for crowns and kingdoms await, but does The Legend of the Six Kings have what it takes to conquer the throne?

We start the album with the epic 'Lightning in the Sky', where a big, creative riff quickly opens into soaring melodies. Jade’s energetic vocals and the driving instrumentation push you forward with enough power to leave you battle-ready within moments. Just when everything seems purely triumphant, darker distorted riffs and hammering drums add some welcome weight. The chorus is ridiculously engaging, while the bridge naturally delivers a beautifully played solo, because honestly, how could it not? It certainly is an energetic and infectious start to the album.

‍

Next up is 'Who Wants to Burn in Heaven', immediately establishing a grand atmosphere through collective choir vocals backed by strong, marching riffs. The drums sit slightly further back in the mix, but here that restraint fits the composition remarkably well, allowing the guitars and voices to lead the charge. The battle-ready spirit continues into the bridge, where marching drums return alongside a commanding vocal performance that practically makes you want to raise your sword. Powerful, catchy and made for voices to join together, this one already feels destined for the live stage.

‍

The next song, 'Iris', might sound familiar, it is FROZEN CROWN’s take on the GOO GOO DOLLS classic. Personally, I’m not entirely convinced that the song benefits from fast double bass and heavier riffing. The cleaner female vocals are technically strong, but I miss some of the fragile cracks and vulnerability that give the original so much emotion, while the slightly rougher male vocals land better for me. Of course, a cover doesn’t need to sound like the original, but this interpretation never quite pulls me into its atmosphere and would probably be a skip. The riff-heavy bridge, piano passage and combined vocals towards the end do improve things, showing plenty of skill even if the overall direction isn’t quite for me.

'River of Time' begins with an interesting drum pattern, and the drums remain a commanding presence throughout the track. Beneath them runs a strongly melodic backbone, with sweeping melodies keeping the song energetic and engaging. The different vocal styles complement each other remarkably well, although in a few places I would have liked them to carry slightly more power to match the fast and melodic rhythm section. But honestly, that is nitpicking at a high level. It remains a strong combination of melody, speed and musicianship.

‍

'To The Stars' leads us towards the end of the album with a central melody that carries a wonderful sense of departure, almost like setting out towards a new beginning. I particularly enjoy the warm vocals here, which practically radiate passion. Another excellent solo leads into an emotional, chant-driven bridge surrounded by epic melodies, before the guitars gain more strength towards the final stretch. And then there is that chorus, ridiculously catchy and more than happy to stay stuck in your head long after the song has ended.

‍

Our closer is also the title track, and 'The Legend of the Six Kings' sees FROZEN CROWN showing off their skill, strong songwriting and, above all, passion. The first vocals arrive noticeably darker, creating a powerful contrast with the equally strong but more beautiful clean delivery and adding considerable depth to the atmosphere. I particularly love the chanting here, while the excellent drum work gives the entire track a commanding backbone. Epic, emotional and packed with character, 'The Legend of the Six Kings' feels like exactly the right way to bring this journey to an end.

‍

With The Legend of the Six Kings, FROZEN CROWN deliver an energetic and passionate journey filled with soaring melodies, commanding drums and excellent guitar work. The interplay between different vocal styles adds plenty of depth, while infectious choruses and epic chants make several tracks feel destined for the live stage. Not every experiment hits the mark, but the album rarely lacks enthusiasm or skill. Catchy, powerful and unmistakably epic, The Legend of the Six Kings is another strong chapter in FROZEN CROWN’s story.
