EVERMORE - MOURNBRAID

Now, with their third full-length album "Mournbraid", Swedish power metal band EVERMORE further strengthen the sound they have been honing over the past few years. The record pairs aggressive yet melodic guitar work with commanding vocals and memorable hooks, all framed by a polished production that gives the songs a clear sense of weight and presence. At the core of the album, the band skillfully balances between intensity and melody. EVERMORE continues to refine their distinctive songwriting, combining energetic arrangements with emotionally charged storytelling. Each track unfolds its own narrative, exploring personal struggles and many challenges of life. True to EVERMORE’s philosophy, the music seeks to forge deep emotional connections with the listener. Beneath the power metal soundscape lies clear intent: craft songs that resonate personally and allow listeners to see fragments of their own experiences reflected in the stories.

First up, the album’s cover artwork was crafted by Álvaro Valverde of AV Art Illustrations, known for his work with ELVENKING. The result underlines the visual identity and perfectly complements "Mournbraid’s" atmospheric sound. 'The Void' kicks off the album with a short but compelling intro, instantly signaling that something epic is underway. The choir is perfectly woven into the orchestral layers, building a dense, cinematic soundscape that promises the intensity to come. The first full track, 'Underdark', hits with full force. Vikland's dramatic drumming and Karlsson’s tension-filled power chords set the stage, while Haraldsson’s piercing vocals cut through like a blade-announcing that the album has truly begun. The momentum rarely eases, with soaring melodies and driving instrumentation pushing the listener forward. Haraldsson’s voice at times reminds of Bruce Dickinson and Tobias Sammet and flows over the arrangement like a shadow, perfectly complementing the instrumentation. The track closes with a creative guitar solo that beautifully accompanies his commanding vocals, leaving a lasting impression. 'Nightstar Odyssey' slows the pace slightly, allowing its epic qualities to shine. The dual vocals in the chorus create a strong sing-along feel. Midway through, the track turns darker with heavier guitars, more forceful drumming, and a more present bass line. The addition of choir elements once again enhances the song’s atmosphere.

'Oath of Apathy' shifts the album into a more reflective mood. With a restrained arrangement, the track allows the vocals to stand at the forefront, carrying the song’s emotional weight. The result is a slower, more focused composition that relies more on atmosphere and vocal expression rather than just power. 'The Illusionist (Raise The Curtain)' pushes the intensity back to full force. Expansive orchestral layers build momentum for another commanding vocal performance from Haraldsson, while Vikland drives the song forward with energetic double-kick drumming. Karlsson enriches the arrangement with rich melodies, razor-sharp riffs, and well-placed solo passages, resulting in an dynamic highlight that perfectly captures the spirit of power metal. 'Ravens at the Gates' opens with an atmospheric and darker setting, with the sound of ravens echoing in the distance before distorted guitar riffs tear through the calm. The solo section, if you listen closely, carries a touch of early MANOWAR. These changes in tone and pacing help broaden the album’s dynamic range. The album closes with the title track, 'Mournbraid', a grand and intense finale. Sweeping orchestral arrangements merge with thick layers of raw, old-school guitar work and fast, melodic drumming, creating a dense and powerful soundscape. Above it all, Haraldsson’s vocals command attention with their versatility and strength, adding emotional depth without overwhelming the instrumentation. The song’s storytelling feels vivid and engaging, pulling the listener into its narrative. As a closing piece, it showcases the band’s confidence, experience, and clear passion for their craft. Although 'Mournbraid' served as the album’s closing track, the record still holds one final surprise. The bonus track 'Old Man’s Tale' follows, delivering exactly what fans of the genre might hope for: a piano-driven power metal ballad. Built on relatively simple musical elements, EVERMORE manages to draw out genuine emotion, even from places you did not expect. As the song unfolds, the restrained arrangement is complemented by delicate violin touches, adding warmth and atmosphere. It’s a fitting and gentle final moment that closes the album on a memorable note.

With Mournbraid, EVERMORE delivers a confident and well-crafted power metal record that balances melody, intensity, and strong storytelling. The album combines powerful vocals, memorable hooks, and polished production with enough variation to keep the listener engaged throughout. A compelling release that confirms the band’s presence within the genre.
