Release Date: 26 June 2026 via AOP Records - Since emerging in 2013, DUIR have carved out a distinctive blend of atmospheric black metal and folk-driven melancholy under the vision of founder MK. Named after the Celtic word for "oak", the project reflects themes of endurance, nature, and ancient wisdom, shaping a sound where windswept folk passages and shadow-drenched black metal coexist in haunting balance. With "Catarsi", DUIR unveil their most ambitious and emotionally charged work so far. Set during the First World War, the album traces a soldier’s descent through pride, despair, and oblivion, merging atmospheric black metal with haunting folk textures to create a darkly cinematic experience. A guest appearance from L.G. of ELLENDE and mixing/mastering by P.G. of GROZA at Ad Nauseam Sounds further strengthen the album’s powerful blend of melody and intensity. Since emerging in 2013, DUIR have steadily risen through the European underground, sharing stages with bands like GAEREA, WIND ROSE, and TSJUDER. Their debut full-length, "T.S.N.R.I.",and the follow-up "Impermanenza", hinted at a more atmospheric and melodic direction, one that reaches a far deeper and more immersive form on Catarsi.

DUIR opens "Catarsi" with the sprawling 'Manifesto', a nearly ten-minute journey that immediately establishes the album’s dark and immersive atmosphere. Melodic guitar lines draw the listener inward before giving way to sinister, deeply unsettling vocals that dominate the foreground without ever overshadowing the instrumental depth beneath them. Folk elements, most notably the haunting use of bagpipes, emerge early, adding texture and a strong sense of atmosphere to the track’s slow-burning progression. As the song unfolds, the guitars grow increasingly distorted, culminating in a crushing, near-doom-laden passage in its final stretch. It’s a powerful and carefully constructed opener that makes the album’s emotional and sonic direction unmistakably clear. 'Di Nessuno' erupts into a relentless storm of blast beats and sharp melodic guitar work, pushing the album into far more aggressive territory. DUIR balances that intensity with lingering folk elements woven subtly through the chaos, giving the track a distinctive atmosphere beneath its black metal ferocity. The harsh, rasping vocals hit with real urgency, especially during the prolonged screams that cut through the song like moments of pure desperation. 'Impeto', featuring L.G. of Ellende, drifts through Catarsi with a dense and deeply immersive atmosphere. The addition of hurdy-gurdy enriches the track’s folk character without softening its dark emotional weight, highlighting just how layered and cohesive Duir’s songwriting feels throughout the album. Vocally, the interplay between Vox in Umbra and L.G. works exceptionally well, especially once the guest vocals emerge midway through the track. Backed by commanding drumming and fluid guitar work, 'Impeto' stands out as one of the record’s most atmospheric and emotionally resonant moments.
'Della Notte' stands apart through its purely instrumental approach, allowing Duir to focus entirely on atmosphere and composition. Floating melodies drift across the track like shadows, suspended above crushing blast beats and intricate guitar work that give the piece both intensity and depth. Without vocals to guide the listener, the band lets the instrumentation carry the emotional weight — and the result is one of the album’s most immersive and cinematic moments. 'Del Giorno' begins with a deceptively calm atmosphere, built on delicate melodies that slowly draw the listener inward before sinister, rasping spoken-word vocals emerge without warning. Duir maintains that eerie restraint in the background until a prolonged, desperate scream suddenly breaks the tension, unleashing pounding drums and surging guitars that drive the track forward with explosive force. A great piece towards the end of the Album. Catarsi closes with 'Oltre l’alba', a finale steeped in atmosphere and emotional weight. Wind, crashing waves, and distant bagpipes create a vivid sense of isolation, as if DUIR are pulling the listener to the edge of some desolate coastline before the song erupts without warning into violent aggression. The bagpipes remain a constant presence even beneath the blast of guitars and drums, giving the track a haunting identity of its own. Long, agonized screams cut through the composition with devastating effect, amplifying the overwhelming melancholy that hangs over the entire piece like dead weight. It’s a powerful and deeply fitting conclusion to the album’s cathartic journey.
With "Catarsi", DUIR delivers a deeply atmospheric and emotionally crushing work that successfully merges the raw intensity of black metal with haunting folk elements and cinematic storytelling. Rich in melancholy, immersive textures, and carefully crafted dynamics, the album feels less like a collection of songs and more like a single descent into memory, despair, and catharsis. Dark, evocative, and confidently composed, Catarsi marks a major step forward for the Italian outfit.
