DEMON SPELL – BLESSED BE THE DARK

Available now via Dying Victims Productions - With "Blessed Be the Dark", DEMON SPELL emerge from the aftermath of their 2024 EP Evil Nights with a fully formed vision of occult heavy metal. The Italian coven presents their debut album as a ritualistic descent into shadow, built on themes of dust, bone, and ancient darkness. The record unfolds like a ceremonial invocation, steeped in doom-laden atmosphere where echoes of the grave seem to resurface. It is music firmly rooted in the traditions of dark, esoteric heavy metal, crafted for those drawn to its timeless mysticism. The influence of MERCYFUL FATE and KING DIAMOND on DEMON SPELL is unmistakable and runs deeply through their sound, most prominently expressed in the striking falsetto of front man Federico Fano. Yet his performance is far from one-dimensional, as he alternates this style with darker, more grounded vocal passages that evoke Ricardo of THE NIGHT ETERNAL. At the same time, subtle affinities to PORTRAIT emerge, both in vocal expression and thematic intent, further enriching the band’s stylistic framework and reinforcing their dedication to classic, ritualistic heavy metal aesthetics.

'As Lucifer Smiles' launches the album with immediate intent, delivering a concise but forceful opening statement. A brief keyboard passage quickly gives way to a razor-sharp riff and relentless drumming, creating a tight, driving momentum from the outset. Federico Fano’s vocal performance stands at the forefront, shifting between controlled highs and piercing falsetto shrieks with clear echoes of KING DIAMOND’s theatrical intensity. Rather than relying on a traditional solo, the track builds tension through bridges, harmonic changes, and rapid fills-an intentional stylistic choice that favors structure over excess. "Hexes and Horrors" sustains the album’s strong opening momentum with a vivid, horror-inspired atmosphere. Haunting keyboard textures quickly give way to a direct, forceful guitar attack that drives the track forward without hesitation. The band relies on focus rather than complexity, shaping the song around sharp, memorable riffs, reinforced by Dario Casabona’s crushing drumming. Federico’s vocal delivery adds a theatrical, venomous edge, full of character and intensity. Riccardo Liberti provides a solid rhythmic foundation, steady and effective, even if his presence remains more supportive than foregrounded. Stripped of excess but rich in impact, 'High on Sacrifice' builds its strength on a rock-driven foundation of steady drums and tightly locked rhythm work. Hook-heavy guitar chords guide the track forward, maintaining a firm sense of motion throughout. Beneath it all, the bass provides a grounded, spacious layer, allowing the guitars to focus on melodic drive rather than technical display. Federico’s vocals push the performance into theatrical extremes, soaring and straining with heightened intensity. The result is a focused, high-energy track that stands out as one of the album’s most immediate and effective moments.

‍

With its high-speed momentum and driving energy, 'Dive The Hellfire' unfolds like a classic highway burner filtered through a harsher, more modern lens, recalling the spirit of early JUDAS PRIEST while pushing into more extreme territory. Sky-reaching, destructive screams dominate the vocal performance, adding urgency and fire to the track. The drums shape the pacing with precision, alternating between controlled cymbal breaks and sudden bursts of speed. The lead guitar remains focused and efficient, favoring melodic direction over technical display. In the final third, new riffs and structural shifts disrupt any sense of repetition, leading into a climax where the vocals continuously ascend, heightening the sense of intensity until the very end. DEMON SPELL bring their debut to a carefully constructed close, once again returning to their recurring use of interludes as structural bridges. 'Premonitions' acts as a brief but atmospheric passage, gently guiding the listener toward the final chapter. From there, the title track 'Blessed Be the Dark' unfolds as the album’s closing statement, fully embracing an 80s-inspired heavy metal aesthetic. There is a clear sense of intention behind its pacing and atmosphere, as the band channels classic influences into a cohesive and ritualistic finale.

‍

With Blessed Be the Dark, DEMON SPELL delivers a confident and stylistically committed debut that channels the spirit of classic 80s heavy metal through a modern, ritualistic lens. While the focus lies more on atmosphere and tradition than innovation, the album succeeds through strong hooks, theatrical vocals, and a clear artistic identity that makes it a compelling and cohesive statement.
