DEMETRA'S SCARS - BORN UNBROKEN

Strong moments emerge when the album's concepts and musicianship align. “The Voice” personifies self doubt as an ever present tormentor, while “Fake Skin” attacks conformity with a sharp chorus and one of the record’s most relatable themes. “The Blasphemer” turns its gaze toward religious hypocrisy, delivering some of the album’s most uncompromising lyrics.

Demetra’s Scars have a knack for thriving on contrast. Samuele Casari’s guitar work shifts between grooves and melodic passages, whilst Yassir Belfartas’ drumming provides a more-than-powerful-enough backbone throughout. Vocals by Denise Pellacani deliver a commanding performance, moving from defiance to vulnerability as each song demands.

The second half of the album continues on with its introspective streak. “They Taught Me” rejects fears and social conditioning, while “Of Love & Instinct” offers a nuanced statement on human connection and identity. “About A Man” closes the album on a thoughtful note, challenging expectations of masculinity with sincerity.

At times, the band’s ambition works against them. Several tracks feel a little crowded with ideas, as if every concept needed to be expressed at once. Yet even when the arrangements become dense, the conviction behind the material remains undeniable.

Born Unbroken is imperfect but compelling, a passionate, thought provoking statement from a band not afraid to question authority, and the stories people are taught about themselves.
