DARK PLAGUE – MASQUERADE

Masquerade opens with 'Social Sickness', where a sample of overlapping voices immediately establishes an uneasy atmosphere. As the conversations gradually dissolve into an unsettling wall of noise, the band erupts into relentless blast beats and razor-sharp guitar riffs, creating an intense and uncompromising introduction. While the harsh vocals deliver plenty of aggression, they are initially overshadowed by the dense rhythm section, leaving the instruments to dominate the mix. Although the vocals become more prominent as the track progresses, they could still benefit from being pushed further to the forefront. What stands out most, however, is the melodic undercurrent that weaves its way through the song, adding a subtle sense of movement and contrast beneath the album's otherwise cold and hostile opening.

Next comes 'Overwhelmed', where DARK PLAGUE adopts a noticeably more restrained approach. Clean guitar passages create an atmosphere of quiet unease, while slow, dragging drums carry the composition beneath a melodic undercurrent. Although the bass remains somewhat understated, its occasional appearances add welcome weight to the arrangement. Breathless whispers and haunted vocals drift through the mix like a lingering shadow before the tempo gradually intensifies, building towards a frantic climax that perfectly reflects the song's title and its overwhelming sense of mounting pressure.

'Bitter Leather & Sweet Pain' wastes no time, launching straight into relentless blast beats and blistering speed. At times, the composition feels slightly overextended, yet the sheer aggression and dynamic songwriting quickly overshadow this minor flaw. Combined with its memorable melodic passages, the track remains engaging from start to finish and never loses its momentum.

'Insidious Plague Of Mind' stands as one of the album's most vicious and uncompromising compositions. Relentless speed, razor-sharp riffs, and forceful drumming drive the track forward, while the harsh vocals emerge from deep within the mix with a suffocating roar. Amid the relentless assault, a surprisingly prominent bass line cuts through, adding an intriguing layer to the song's intensity. It is a powerful composition that propels the album confidently towards its closing stages.

'Useless' brings "Masquerade" to a fitting close. Driven by dark, brooding melodies, the track builds an oppressive atmosphere, while deep, sustained growls weave through the composition with commanding intensity. Cymbal-driven drumming and sharp riffs propel the song forward, and the throaty vocals evoke the feeling of marching relentlessly into battle. In contrast, a clean guitar passage supported by a subtle bass line closes the album on a surprisingly calm and reflective note. It is a well-crafted finale that showcases DARK PLAGUE's songwriting and provides a satisfying conclusion to the record.

With "Masquerade", DARK PLAGUE delivers a bleak and uncompromising black metal album that successfully balances relentless aggression with atmospheric depth. While the vocal mix occasionally holds the record back and a handful of passages could have been tighter, the band's strong songwriting, memorable melodies, and immersive atmosphere ensure that these shortcomings never overshadow the overall experience. A rewarding listen for fans of modern black metal that remains firmly rooted in the genre's cold foundations.
