DAEMONIUM REGNI - SELF-TITLED

Emerging as the first statement from Swedish solo project DAEMONIUM REGNI, the self-titled album "Daemonium Regni" introduces the dark and epic vision of Micke Broberg, widely known for his work as the vocalist of UNANIMATED. Despite this being the project’s debut, Broberg is a seasoned figure in the extreme metal scene, with decades of experience across various bands and collaborations. Set for release via Darkness Shall Rise Productions on April 17, 2026, the album represents both the project’s first full-length and its very first official release. The involvement of Dan Swanö in the mastering process only adds further weight to the anticipation. Stylistically, the record blends epic and melodic black metal with subtle doom influences, creating a sound that aims for both grandeur and atmosphere. The only question that remains is whether the music itself can fulfill the expectations raised by its presentation.

The album opens with 'Mater daemonium',  a crushingly heavy, dragging guitar tone that immediately sets a somber and weighty atmosphere. The drums take a leading role without overpowering the melodic framework, allowing the composition to breathe while maintaining its intensity. From the abyssal depths emerge corroded, rasping screams that further deepen the ominous aura surrounding the track. Chanting, choir-like voices intertwine seamlessly with the harsh, demonic vocals, creating a powerful contrast that enhances the song’s dark character. The bass line plays a crucial role as well, subtly driving the narrative forward and reinforcing a sense of urgency and underlying danger. Altogether, it makes for a compelling and impactful opening to the record. Next up is 'Ascendens Tenebrae' and there is no moment to catch one’s breath. Immediate waves of rapid-fire blast beats crash in with force, propelling the track forward with relentless intensity. It quickly becomes clear just how central the vocals are to the album’s identity. Positioned prominently in the mix, they shift between demonic growls and somber, almost liturgical humming, adding a distinct and commanding presence. The exclusive use of Latin lyrics further enhances the album’s thematic depth and ritualistic atmosphere. While the vocal performance undeniably stands at the forefront, one might wish for the guitar lines to be given slightly more prominence at times—though this remains a minor critique in an otherwise powerful composition. A standout moment comes in the form of dual clean vocals emerging in the song’s midsection.

‍

'Lunar Sanguinea' stands out with a striking, immediately memorable melodic line, carried by demanding drumming and a strong, driving rhythm section. Once again, the versatility of Micke Broberg’s vocal performance comes to the forefront, as he shifts effortlessly from pained, throaty screams to dark, commanding growls within moments. A brief passage of clean vocals in the track’s midsection adds another dimension, evoking the eerie sensation of a ritualistic summoning-an otherworldly presence emerging from the surrounding darkness. Just when the album seems to settle into a familiar pattern, 'Spiritus in Flammo'-one of the previously released singles-introduces a striking shift in dynamics. The track opens with clean, delicate guitar lines, accompanied by almost whispered vocals that create a fragile, introspective atmosphere. This calm is soon shattered as the song plunges back into venomous, spine-chilling vocals reminiscent of early IMMORTAL, all while being underscored by haunting, chant-like choir elements. Throughout its runtime, the track repeatedly returns to its serene beginnings, only to erupt again into forceful intensity moments later. The result is a compelling push-and-pull dynamic that makes for one of the album’s most memorable and engaging compositions.

‍

"Daemonium Regni" is a confident and immersive debut that thrives on atmosphere, vocal versatility, and a strong sense of dark grandeur. While occasional imbalances in the mix leave room for refinement, the album’s commanding presence and cohesive vision firmly establish Micke Broberg’s solo project as a compelling force within the epic black metal landscape.
