CROWEN - THROUGH THE DYING MIST

Released February 20th via Inverse Records - Through The Dying Mist marks Crowen’s third EP, a technical and envisioned piece with clean mixing and pure feeling. The band, hailing from Finland, have created a short but beautiful listen, created with equal parts despair and brutality. The performance is given body by the combination of its roots in melodic folk and death, with each of the four tracks a solid listen.

“Ember Wraith” is intense and furious in its sound as it is with lyrical subject matter, a tale of revenge and endless fire, with gentle notes lingering throughout. The atmosphere is strong as a start to the EP, ghostly and persisting with its haunting backing keyboard, provided by vocalist Esa Uusimaa. Strong, intense drums and running riffs bring a synergy that showcases one of Crowen’s more intense works.

‍

Like many death metal projects there are diverse skills shared between few. Uusimaa is a raw vocalist with dual layers; one side mournful and droning verses while the other vehement screams from the deep, carrying his lyrics forward. “Line of Silence” and “I am the Sorrow” show this discordant harmony, which combine into a heightened emotional layer. Uusimaa along with Sami Sandberg provide guitars that intuitively know when to intensify, serving much of the emotion of the track, while Toumas Saukkonen adds depth with underlying bass.

“I Am The Sorrow” is pain personified, a duality of vocals and instruments that brings the emotion of Through The Dying Mist to a high, another fine example of the push and pull of sounds that shape the piece. It ranges from pure energy to folkish ballad, a place Crowen is very much in their element. Meanwhile, “The Unwritten End” is a solid finale, thunderous. It is a slower piece, broody and bleeding its despair, with Finnish verses to create a traditional, folky sound. It echoes some nostalgia, reminiscent of soundscapes used in 00s Nordic metal.

‍

Through The Dying Mist is moody, melodious and methodical, showing the best of what the band has to offer on a technical and atmospheric scale. At a runtime just short of 20 minutes, it is worth the brief peering into the void.

SCORE 8.5/10
