CANDARIAN - TREPANACIÓN

Out now vía Memento Mori / Me Saco Un Ojo - Candarian land with Trepanación - a record built on early 90s death metal, that has been reduced to its ugliest essentials & executed with clarity. The result, immediate, and utterly physical.

The opening stretch cements what’s to follow. Dry, cutting guitars, favouring constant motion over anything else. Riffs cycling rapidly, rarely lingering, creating a sense of controlled violence. Bass anchors the entire record with a thick presence that prevents the material from collapsing into treble blur.

‍

Deep, cavernous vocals sit inside the mix, extending the atmosphere, and holding down as the strongest point on this record. Candarian know how to avoid any suffocating density associated with their influences, instead opting for balance that keeps listeners engaged across repeat listens.

‍

The second half expands the palette more. Slower, doomesque passages introduce space and tension, culminating in the extended closer “Vilipendio del Cadaver,” which stretches the band’s core into a deliberate, oppressive form.

‍

There are a few limitations. Lead work is minimal, and individuality in tone or composition rarely breaks through the template. This is adherence though, not a bout of new found reinvention.

‍

Still, Trepanación wins through execution. It’s precise, forceful, and internally consistent. A debut that knows exactly what it is and what it is meant to be.

SCORE 8/10
