ANTRISCH - EXPEDITION III: RENITENZPFAD

Available now via AOP Records - ANTRISCH, the Bavarian-Austrian atmospheric black metal ensemble, are back with their third major release, "Expedition III: Renitenzpfad", following 2021’s EP "Expedition I: Dissonanzgrat" and 2023’s full-length "Expedition II: Die Passage". Leaving behind the icy landscapes of their previous work, the band now explores a wholly new and equally enthralling environment. On their new album, ANTRISCH pushes further into shadowed territory where history and madness intertwine. "Renitenzpfad" follows the trail of the infamous conquistador Lope de Aguirre-a man whose Amazonian expedition in 1560 spiraled into paranoia, violence, and mutiny. It is within this fevered heart of darkness that ANTRISCH root their latest work, drawing the audience into a landscape that feels as suffocating as it is haunting.

Opening the album, 'I. Prolog-Conquista' immediately establishes a vivid sense of narrative and atmosphere. The track begins with spoken word passages and restrained, almost acoustic guitar lines, creating a cinematic introduction before giving way to a surge of raw intensity. What follows is a powerful blend of tremolo-driven riffing and blast beats, underpinned by piercing black metal vocals that cut through the dense soundscape. Wasting no time,'Hidalgo Infernal-Der baskische Wolf' drives straight into far more aggressive territory. Massive guitar layers, agile drumming, and Maurice’s piercing, venom-laced vocals establish a tense, hostile atmosphere from the very beginning. Beneath it all, shadowy melodic lines weave through the composition, adding a brooding depth and lending the track a sense of tightly controlled chaos. The intensity briefly recedes into a quieter, spoken passage, underscored by Spanish-tinged guitar lines that strike a delicate balance between unease and subtle beauty. This moment of restraint amplifies what follows, as the track erupts once more into a furious storm of blast beats. As abruptly as it begins, it comes to a halt, leaving behind a stark, unsettling silence. 'Los Marañones I: Nattern & Narren' shifts the pace, favoring atmosphere over sheer speed. The track immerses the audience in its setting through subtle elements like animal sounds and ambient noise, evoking the sensation of being deep within the jungle. Recurring traces of Spanish-inspired musical lines further reinforce the album’s overarching theme, grounding the narrative in its historical context. An emotionally charged spoken word passage adds another layer of depth, while the drums move with a heavy, rolling presence that paradoxically retains a certain lightness. The piercing black metal screams cut through the dense soundscape effectively, adding intensity without overwhelming the track’s carefully constructed atmosphere.

ANTRISCH relies on a consistent compositional framework throughout the album. Their songwriting unfolds in a wave-like motion, where blistering, high-velocity passages transition into groove-driven sections and brooding, atmospheric interludes. While this structure becomes apparent early on, it ultimately stands as a defining strength, lending the record cohesion without sacrificing intensity. What truly sets the band apart is their ability to shape these recurring elements into something consistently engaging and immersive. Very subtle shifts in melody, pacing, and arrangement of songs prevent the material from becoming predictable, instead fostering a sense of narrative progression that reflects the album’s conceptual arc. The interplay between aggression and restraint feels both deliberate and fluid, allowing tension to rise and fall in a natural, almost cinematic fashion. The opening moments of 'Bittergrün-Los Marañones II' are once again marked by a striking blend of beauty and melancholy, the riff slowly builds tension,, a recurring trait throughout the album. Before long, heavy guitars and a buzzing bassline set in, grounding the track in a darker, weightier atmosphere. At the forefront are the tortured, gasping screams, carrying a sense of anguish that defines the song’s emotional core-indeed, the vocal performance across the entire album is nothing short of exceptional. Next up is 'Abkehr-Non Sufficit Orbis', Around the one-minute-and-twenty-second mark, the vocalist delivers a chilling spoken passage, capturing the terror of someone reporting from deep within the dense jungle. The track then bursts into a more violent section, driven by an aggressive yet unmistakably melodic riff—classic ANTRISCH. It concludes with another spoken passage in Spanish, layered over eerie ambient samples, perfectly embodying the band’s name, a term from Austro-Bavarian meaning roughly "haunting” or "mysterious. Even amidst moments where genre conventions are most apparent—such as in 'Verschanzt-Perleneilandterror' ANTRISCH asserts a strong, unmistakable identity. Rather than falling into predictable patterns, the band relies on focused songwriting, dynamic arrangements, and memorable hooks that keep each track compelling. This equilibrium between tradition and individuality emerges as one of the album’s greatest strengths. While firmly rooted in their stylistic origins, the music retains enough nuance and personality to stand apart. This approach culminates in the closing track, 'Canis lupum edit-Wolfsfalle | Verratener Verräter' where thematic and musical threads converge, creating a finale that is both cohesive and strikingly powerful, what an end.
