Anthrax - Cursum Perficio

“Persistence of Memory” is a short and eerie opener, leading into the heavy, bass-filled “The Long Goodbye.” Immediately one is struck with that classic Anthrax sound. “It’s For the Kids” has that chaotic thrash trademark, punching through with some heavy, hard-hitting lyrics, a wicked Frank Bello bass breakdown and a vigorous guitar solo. A single of the album, it is a standout banger and an instant pit classic. Scott Ian and Johnathan Donais’ riffs bounce off each other and create some evil, aggressive atmosphere yet there always fun, with easy to thrash to rhythms.

“Everybody’s Got a Plan” is addictive and full of adrenaline, hammering away with Charlie Benante’s aggro beats, smashing right into “The Edge of Perfection.” The band has a ton of energy, channeling their feelings into every ounce of the album. Joey Belladonna’s voice is full of heart, bringing emotion to catchy lyrics, “It’s For the Kids” and “Edge of Perfection” are incredibly memorable. 

“Infectious,” much like a lot of Cursum Perficio, feels like a throwback to the iconic Anthrax sound, as is the energetic “NYC 93”, catchy and jumping with mosh spirit. Title song “Cursum Perficio” is a unique, balanced track, with some interesting guitar and vocal techniques. “T.O.M.B” and “Watch it Go” arrive on the tail end, matching the energy of the tracklist with just as much thunder.

Ending on “My Victory,” Anthrax saves some of the best for last, shaking the earth with fast-paced, wild bass and drums. It’s a strong, fitting ending to the album, which remains consistently ferocious and engaged in the fight. There’s power and grit right til the very end.

Cursum Perficio is not the last we’ll see of Anthrax, but they also say they’re satisfied with what they’ve achieved; a complete album that signifies the band has come full circle, showing the knowledge and experience gained in the past fifteen years. Cursum Perficio is an explosive celebration of their 45-year long journey, full of kick and never tiring, a gift to fans and enjoyers of trash metal alike. Dive into the pit and feel the intense energy Anthrax does best.
