ANGELLORE - NOCTURNES

Available now via Ardua Music - Shrouded in melancholy and carried by nearly two decades of artistic evolution, ANGELLORE have carved out a singular place within gothic doom metal. The Avignon collective weave together sorrowful grandeur, folk textures, and deeply human storytelling, creating albums that feel less like records and more like slowly unfolding tragedies. Works such as "La Litanie des Cendres" and "Rien Ne Devait Mourir" showcased the band’s gift for transforming despair into something hauntingly beautiful. With "Nocturnes", ANGELLORE opens the door to yet another shadow-drenched chapter-a record that has lingered and matured in darkness for almost ten years, emerging now as perhaps their most intimate and emotionally consuming creation yet. With that said, let’s step into the shadowed world of "Nocturnes" and explore the album.

Across five sprawling and deeply immersive compositions, Angellore draws the listener into a world steeped in storm-darkened beauty, fragile romance, mysticism, and crushing melancholy. Every moment of "Nocturnes" flows with overwhelming emotional weight as flutes, oboes, bass clarinets, cello, and piano intertwine seamlessly with towering guitars and emotionally charged vocal performances, creating vast, layered soundscapes that feel both comforting and consuming. 'Falling Birds' opens like a descent into darkness, pairing fragile beauty with crushing emotional weight. Gentle, mournful melodies slowly rise into towering chords as angelic vocals drift through waves of sorrow-soaked guitar work, pulling the listener deeper into the album’s bleak, dreamlike world. Oboe and bass clarinet add a ghostly elegance to the atmosphere, but the real impact comes from the vocals themselves. The shift from celestial cleans to agonized, pain-ridden growls is devastating, turning the song from haunting to outright crushing. It’s not just heavy in sound-it feels heavy, like grief and depression given a voice.'Black Sun River' draws the listener in with a hypnotic pull, drifting through darkness, beauty, and deep emotional weight. ANGELLORE blends ghostly atmosphere with towering melodies, creating a sound that feels both fragile and immense. It opens with shimmering angelic lines, driven forward by faster drums and shadowed clean vocals, while the instrumentation builds layered waves of melancholy with careful precision. The vocals sit subtly in the mix, enhancing rather than dominating the atmosphere. Around the 4:30 mark, everything shifts. A mournful, cathedral-like passage evokes the spirit of Peter Steele before distorted guitars crash in, unleashing a massive surge of growls and choral force. The effect is overwhelming, delicate yet crushing, intimate yet colossal.

'Martyrium' unfolds like a nocturnal vision, dragging everything into wind-scoured moors beneath a racing, moonlit sky. Space and time dissolve as the track turns each moment into midnight reflection, where every note falls like cold rain and emotion pushes beyond reason into something overwhelming. Ethereal orchestration lifts the song into a cinematic, almost sacred realm, with cathedral choirs deepening its transportive pull. Even the faster passages retain a strange beauty, as blast beats cut through vast, towering soundwalls without breaking the atmosphere. Vocally, the track thrives on contrast-blackened screams and deeper, death metal growls locked in a constant, expressive tension rather than conflict. This interplay of extremes becomes the heartbeat of the song, weaving chaos and elegance into a unified emotional current that defines the album’s poetic intensity. Like the last light fading into dusk, 'A Dormant Stream' closes "Nocturnes" in quiet, haunting beauty. It unfolds as a delicate tapestry of emotion, where measured guitar lines move in solemn dialogue with ethereal flute and vast, resonant chords. A dark, folkloric procession emerges-where drama and tragedy soften into something almost sacred. The track doesn’t just end the album, it pulls you inside its world, until everything outside feels distant and unreal. There’s a deeply emotional stillness at its core, that strange blend of nostalgia, melancholy, and bittersweet happiness that lingers after the final notes fade. Even the guitars seem to cry out, while the synths and instrumentation cut with aching beauty. Blackened screams drift through it all, perfectly woven into the contrast of splendour and despair, bringing "Nocturnes" to an ending that feels less like closure and more like an emotional echo that refuses to disappear.

‍

Nocturnes is a deeply immersive and emotionally rich journey through gothic doom and folkloric melancholy. While its pacing demands patience, its beauty, atmosphere, and storytelling make it a rewarding and haunting experience from start to finish.
